Room 5 students are encouraged to read for at least 20 minutes a day. Reading consists of a variety of genre including being read to, listening to audiobooks (such as on Youtube or sites such as Audible or Storytime RNZ), reading online books from Reading Eggspress (linked below), school journals, a range of fiction and nonfiction chapter books, reading to siblings, and reading magazines, newspapers or graphic novels. The Room 5 Daily AFTER INTERVAL Literacy activities include:
freewriting - following the writing process of planning, drafting, recrafting, peer share, editing, teacher share and publishing
keyboard practice with typing club
silent sustained reading (SSR) - reading milage
spelling books - testing and using the word wall, spelling assessments and students' own writing to make a list of new words to learn
scattergories - dictionary skills
Reading Eggspress Stadium - spelling, grammar, vocabulary, correct sentences challenge activities
Before you start, turn to a random page in the book and read it. For every word that you don't know, you should hold up a finger.
