Tips for the Speech Season
1. Football Clean Up
Sign up AS SOON AS POSSIBLE for a football clean up date!!! (Check calendar in advance). Please do NOT sign up if you aren’t sure about your schedule.
2. Concession Stands
Sign up on your own to work in the fall and winter concession stands. Each member will be required to work at least one concession stand during the year!
3. Coach Assistance
Stop in and talk to a coach either before filling out your forms, before tryouts, or both. Bounce ideas off of us, ask our opinions, and start looking for possible scripts. Don’t wait until the last minute. Fill out your goal sheet.
4. Selecting categories/Filling out forms
Be sure to be honest with yourself and the coaches when asked whether or not you would be willing to do something new. Be daring, broaden your speech horizons, with so many people competing it would be smart to have a wide range of interests.
5. Conflicts
Check your sports, music, family, and other activity schedules NOW for conflicts. If we are given enough advance notice we can sometimes make the seemingly impossible, possible. Do NOT expect Ms. Osborne to check for your conflicts (even when printed on the form).
6. Organization
Become as organized as possible. Use an agenda book or something similar. This should help you to notice conflicts well in advance.
7. Tryouts
When you come to tryouts, be prepared to do everything when you arrive. We don’t have extra time for you to go to the hallway to prepare (when the category requires preparation for tryouts in advance). PRACTICE AHEAD OF TIME!!!!
8. Repeating in an individual event
We are very hesitant to have students in the same individual category for two consecutive years (there are rare exceptions). When you are filling out your tryout forms, this might be something to keep in mind. Talk to a coach in advance if you have questions.
9. A student can ONLY be in ONE interp. event each year. Interp. events are: poetry, prose, and literary program.
