Acting - a student acts out a scene from a play or book. It can be serious or humorous. No make up or props are used. Length - up to 8 minutes memorized
After Dinner Speaking - the student writes an original humorous or inspirational speech aimed at a particular audience. Writing and delivery skills are important, as well as creativity. Length - up to 5 minutes 50 words notes allowed
Expository Address - the student writes and presents an informative speech on a topic of interest to them. Props and posters can be part of the presentation. Length - up to 6 minutes 50 words notes allowed
Improvisational Acting - the student draws two characters and a situation and uses these to create a story which he/she acts out 5 minutes of preparation time is allowed Length - up to 5 minutes imagination needed
Literary Program - the student reads a combination of poetry and prose with a theme in mind (examples: friendship or survival) facial and vocal expression as well as development of the theme are important. Length - up to 10 minutes read from script
Original Oratory - the student writes and then memorizes a persuasive speech on a topic of interest to them. A lectern may be used along with 50 words of notes. Length- up to 8 minutes memorized
Poetry - the student reads one or more poems, with both facial and vocal expression along with interpretation of the material. Length - up to 6 minutes read from script
Prose - the student reads a short story, article, portion of a novel vocal and facial expression are important along with interpretation of the material. Length - up to 6 minutes read from script
Public Address - the student selects and memorizes a speech once given by someone else, while trying to communicate the author’s ideas and feelings, 50 words of notes are allowed. Length - up to 8 minutes memorized
Radio News Announcing - the student receives a packet at contest containing news, weather, sports, and a commercial to edit and arrange into a 4 to 5 minute radio broadcast. 30 minutes of preparation time allowed. The student delivers the broadcast over a speaker system without an audience in the room. Length 4 -5 minutes cold reading from script
Review - the student reads a book or play or watches a movie or play then writes a critical analysis. Comments on theme, style, characters, staging, author/ director might be included. Length - up to 8 minutes 50 words of notes memorized
Solo Musical Theatre - the student performs one song from a musical in character. Acting is essential. Length- 5 minutes memorized
Spontaneous - the student draws three contemporary issues at contest, selects
Speaking one, and has three minutes to prepare a speech. Research of many topics prior to contest is necessary. Length - up to 7 minutes 50 words notes allowed
Storytelling - tell any story in your own words, using actions and character voices, along with facial and vocal expression. The story might be different every time you tell it. Delivered while sitting. Length - up to 5 minutes partially memorized
