So, what does it all cost?
As with all school activities and hobbies there are some costs, but we do try to keep these low.
On Joining
There is a one-off charge of £35 on joining the Contingent.
Activity Costs for 2025
There are numerous activities that take place during each year, usually 2 weekends in a term with several other 1 day or evening activities.
The charges towards the cost of travel, food and accommodation for training are currently:
DCCT evenings £ 3
1 day events £ 5
Weekend Training £10-15
Adventurous training (8 days at Easter) £85 (2nd year and older cadets)
CCF Central Camp (7 days in June) £85 (or less)
RAF Camp (8 days in July or August) £85 (or less – depends on activities provided)
All cadets are expected to attend Central Camp in their first year.
There are numerous other courses that take place at times during the year covering a whole range of activities, with similar costs to those above. Adventurous Training (AT) courses in the UK are about £40 for a week's professional instruction. Some, like skiing in Germany or Canada, are a bit more expensive (at about £500), which is still cheap compared to school skiing trips, and some activities have age restrictions.
These charges represent excellent value when compared to the cost of a UK civilian activity holiday, which can be over £900 per week.
Clothing and Equipment
The Army and RAF provide the uniform on loan, apart from boots. The uniform and any other loan items must be returned on leaving.
We have a trade account with a supplier of military equipment (including boots) that allows us to get them up to 50% discount on what Internet sites charge. For example, new boots from around £28. Please see Kit for Sale.
There are several other items that cadets will require regularly.
Gloves
Boot cleaning Kit (including spare laces)
Knife, Fork, Spoon and Mug. The camping style and robust plastic mug are fine.
Small torch (the sort that takes 2 size AA batteries)
Watch – preferably with hands but if it is digital then 24hr format is preferred.
Good walking socks – 2 pair are issued with uniform. Note sports socks are not good enough.
Clothing care kit (sewing kit)
Notepad + pen/pencil
Travel wash kit
Personal First Aid Kit containing:
Any personal medicines with instructions and 4 doses of Paracetamol / Ibuprofen.
Plasters + a support bandage.
Blister kit (Optional but recommended).
Many cadets also like to buy a Contingent Tee Shirt.
Cadets will be loaned other items as required, such as Rucksacks, Sleeping bag and Webbing, but those cadets who wish to bring their own are welcome to do so.
If you wish to look at the equipment from our supplier, please look at www.kombatuk.com, but please ignore the prices you can see online; we can obtain discounts of up to 50% as mentioned above.
