This course is for anyone who struggles with writing sentences - a skill vitally important for communicating in the workplace, at school, and within the community. This course will focus on reviewing basic parts of speech, punctuation, sentence structure, and some spelling rules. This course is designed to help students with the TABE Level M and GED.

This course is for anyone who struggles with finding key ideas and details when reading - a skill vitally important in the workplace, at school, and within the community. This course will focus on reviewing concepts such as main/central idea, theme, supporting details/evidence, inferences, and use of reading strategies. This course is designed to help students with the TABE Level M/D and GED.

Students will cover all language skills that appear on the TABE levels M and D. Course will include a pre and post-assessment, in-class discussions and activities, sample TABE questions, and exit ticket assessments for each class.

Through reading, watching, and analyzing the news, this course develops critical thinking skills and reading skills. Students will read for meaning, evaluate the articles for credibility, discuss issues within the articles, and, if students wish to, discuss solutions to problems presented in these news articles and plan actions to take. News articles will be a mix of up-to-date news and slightly older articles. Student interest will be taken into account when choosing news topics. As necessary, materials providing historical context (or other necessary background knowledge) will be added.

This course connects modern art with creative writing. Students will look at famous modern paintings and learn about the artists who made them, when they were created, and what art style they belong to. These paintings will then be used as starting points for writing stories, poems, and other creative pieces.

Each week we will examine writing from a different genre (i.e. short story, poetry, journalism, creative nonfiction, etc) and think about what makes the writing great. If you have always struggled with putting pen to paper, then this course is for you. The goal of this course is to begin building sentences, then paragraphs. One strategy that is used is practicing free writes, then learning how to put thoughts into writing that is comprehensible for others.
