At its core, math is about having fun, being creative with tools and ideas, and explaining why things work the way they do! This class is geared towards just that - fun and creativity. Mathematical reasoning is different than the kind of reasoning we use for other subjects, but it is rooted in critical thinking at its core. We’ll be exploring games, puzzles, and patterns of all sorts to get familiar with building up that reasoning.
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00-6:30 PM beginning April 29, 2025
We use fractions in our everyday lives and this class will help you visualize and feel comfortable working with them! This course will introduce students to fractions and cover everything needed about this topic related to the TABE M test and beyond.

This course will do a deep dive into the world of probability and advanced applications of fractions. We will be solving word problems that represent real-world scenarios, and we will be learning how to use fractions to describe probability. Everyday life is messy and full of randomness. Learning to use fractions to predict, prepare, and design for the unexpected is invaluable!

How do we determine how big something is? If we’re to measure the size of a chicken, would we do it in inches or yards? If we measured the distance from Burlington to LA, would we do it in miles or inches? We can see that things can be large and small just by looking, but to really understand how to place a value on size requires measurement. Some things we can’t even measure with our hands and our eyes, like the size of an atom! What if we wanted to fill something with water, could we pick up droplets of liquid and use a ruler? Not only do we need different tools to measure, we need different references as well. The US uses one system of measurement while much of the rest of the world uses another! We’ll learn the differences between these systems, and learn how to switch between them as needed. By understanding measurement, you can understand a lot more about how things stack up in the world around you.

Algebra tends to be a web of topics that all come together to allow us to manipulate equations and solve them for more information. However, that process is difficult and requires reading into a sort of “algebraic language”. Not only do we need to be able to describe problems in terms of equations, but we need to be able to read through information we’re given and pick out key ideas that will form pieces of those equations. We need to be able to understand these equations in full - from describing all their pieces, to using insight from other topics to construct the pieces. This is not just a math process, it’s just as much a language-based one.

If you can't tell how graphs, tables and functions are related then this course is for you. It will begin by examining ratios, rates, unit rates/unit price, and proportions. It will next look at the calculation of percent rate of change, taxes and fees, discounts and markups, gratuity and commission, and simple interest. The course will proceed to understand converting measurements. Finally, students will work to understand functions, where the focus will be on constants of proportionality, using tables and graphs to identify functions, and identifying and constructing equations that depict certain functions.

Have you ever wanted to understand how steep a hill or a road is? Have you ever wanted to outpace an opponent in a race? Maybe you’ve wanted to figure out how many days it’d take you to save up for a bill or a new purchase? Maybe you’re just trying to draw out a floor or a room-plan and need to make some lines to scale! This is where lines, shapes, and rates of change come into play. Most things in our world don’t really follow clear-cut lines or proportional relationships. However, we can use lines and proportions to make guesses at underlying patterns or to explain some of the simpler things in our world. This can be a very powerful tool to build off of. Not only can we use these lines, we can visualize and reference them in spaces we make too! When we use lines to make shapes, we get to choose how to visualize them.

From everyday math to algebra, there are concepts that serve to create a foundation for everything else. While scattered, these concepts aid in being able to do algebra, understand measurement, work with shapes, understand comparison between numbers, and maintain balance in equations. This piece of foundation will not only be useful in a pre-algebra or algebra class, but will extend to other classes too.
