At Virginia Tech, we study a wide range of petrologic and geochemical processes using a combination of natural samples, experiments, and numerical modeling. We have three primary research areas, several faculty, and a suite of facilities described below.
The Metamorphism research group explores a wide variety of themes associated with improving our understanding of magmatic and metamorphic systems. We also now also work on the interaction of atmospheric particles with aircraft engines – a novel form of metmorphism!
The Experimental research group uses high pressure-temperature experiments to study processes that are occurring in the inaccessible interiors of the planets.
The Fluids Research group are concerned with the distribution, properties and role of fluids in planetary processes.
We utilize a range of Research and Analytical facilities on the Virginia Tech campus and in the nearby Corporate Research Center. Together, these permit a diverse array of modern and innovative research, also providing excellent opportunities for student training.
