If you are interested in submitting an Application for Simultaneous Graduate Degree, please follow the steps below.
Your application will not be considered, if you do not show proficiency in CS 5020 OR show proof of completion of an equivalent course at another institution of higher education. CS 5020 is the equivalent to CS 2114, the second level Java programming and data structures course offered by the CS Department at Virginia Tech. You can enroll in CS 5020 at Virginia Tech prior to submitting an Application for Simultaneous Degree.
Your application will not be considered, if you do not complete CS5040 or CS3114 (undergraduate equivalent), the Intermediate Data Structures and Algorithm Analysis course we offer from the CS Department at Virginia Tech. You can enroll in CS 5040 at Virginia Tech prior to submitting an Application for Simultaneous Degree.

“Students wishing to work toward two graduate degrees in different departments/programs at the same time should submit an Application for Simultaneous Graduate Degree form.” See above for the process of submitting a form.
Some enrollment restrictions apply to students who are working toward two graduate degrees in different departments/programs at the same time:
No more than 50% of appropriate graded course work requirements for a master's degree may be common to both degrees.
For example, if one master's degree requires 20 credits of graded coursework and the other degree requires 30 credits of graded coursework, no more than 10 credits (50% of the graded work on the degree with lower credit requirements) can be used toward both degrees.
No Research or Project and Report credits from one degree may be counted toward the other degree.
No credits can be triple-counted.
The Graduate School has specific policies they abide by when considering what courses can be used in your different degrees. Graduate School is 100% always okay with students reaching out to them (grads@vt.edu) for more detailed information, or more individualized information. They should be okay with working with you to figure out how you should plan out all your degrees.
No. You cannot request for a force add for the course you'd like before submitting your application. Please wait until your application has been completely processed before adding any courses.
Then it has not yet been fully processed. Please try to submit your paperwork as early as possible if you want to be able to add courses during the time you need it by. We are not responsible for any dates missed if you do not submit your application early enough.
Please reach out to the MEng CSA Graduate Program Coordinator, Pamela Untalan (pamelau20@vt.edu), for any remaining questions, comments, or concerns.
