The "Black" or African American image has undergone many different forms: from the caricatures of the Jim Crow Era to how they have evolved in modern society. The purpose of this site is to analyze these caricatures and explore what they've evolved into.Â
Jim Crow was the Era immediately after the end of slavery due to the Emancipation Proclamation signed by Abraham Lincoln. The term Jim Crow originates from a Minstrel Show in the 1830s. The performer wore Blackface and danced a routine making fun of a silly black person named "Jim Crow"; the name became the face of this racial caste system primarily operated in southern and border states between 1877 and the mid-1960s. At first glance/mention, it will be seen as a set of rigid anti-black laws to maintain control over African Americans after slavery, but it was so much more. In slavery, African Americans were seen as 3/5th of a person due to the Three-Fifths Compromise of 1787, unfortunately, nothing changed after their freedom was given; due to Jim Crow, they were seen as second-class citizens. Jim Crow was a time of legal anti-black racism and that's the point a lot of people forget. It also encouraged many stereotypes of Blackness that are still present today through various ways.
During Jim Crow, as previously mentioned, African Americans had stringent rules to follow or were faced with very harsh and dehumanizing consequences. These rules include:
"Never assert or even intimate that a white person is lying."
"Never impute dishonorable intentions to a white person."
"Never suggest that a white person is from an inferior class."
"Never lay claim to, or overly demonstrate, superior knowledge or intelligence."
"Never curse a white person."
"Never laugh derisively at a white person."
"Never comment upon the appearance of a white female."
They also had very serious social norms to follow as well including:
"A black male could not offer his hand (to shake hands) with a white male because it implied being socially equal. Obviously, a black male could not offer his hand or any other part of his body to a white woman, because he risked being accused of rape."
"Black and white people were not supposed to eat together. If they did eat together, white people were to be served first, and some sort of partition was to be placed between them."
"Under no circumstance was a black male to offer to light the cigarette of a white female -- that gesture implied intimacy."
"Black people were not allowed to show public affection toward one another in public, especially kissing, because it offended white people."
"Jim Crow etiquette prescribed that black people were introduced to white people, never white people to black people. For example: 'Mr. Peters (the white person), this is Charlie (the black person), that I spoke to you about.'"
"White people did not use courtesy titles of respect when referring to black people, for example, Mr., Mrs., Miss., Sir, or Ma'am. Instead, black people were called by their first names. Black people had to use courtesy titles when referring to white people, and were not allowed to call them by their first names."
"If a black person rode in a car driven by a white person, the black person sat in the back seat, or the back of a truck."
"White motorists had the right-of-way at all intersections."
The most common punishment for defining or failing to respect these standards was lynchings. They were often public displays of dehumanizing punishment and disrespect. They were performed by what was called Lynch Mobs and were a spectacle to see for the white citizens in these communities.
Also, Jim Crow was a time of severe separation between white people and black people. White ministries taught that the White race was the superior race in all important ways; making it okay to mistreat and dehumanize those outside of it. This understanding is the reason why Jim Crow was present for so long until African Americans stood up against mistreatment and abuse. It also allowed for things such as Segregation, disenfranchisement, and many other things such as:
"Barbers. No colored barber shall serve as a barber (to) white girls or women (Georgia)."
