This is the least-known caricature on the list. It originated in England as a "lovable" character in a children's book. Overtime has been recognized to be a racist stereotype of black people. It is often very ugly, very dark(jet black), has large white-rimmed eyes, red or white clown lips, and wild fizzy hair. They usually dress the character in a jacket, trousers, bow tie, and stand-up collar with the colors of red, white, blue, and sometimes yellow. It was used for an assortment of things including postcards, jam jars, paperweights, brooches, wallets, perfume bottles, wooden puzzles, sheet music, wallpaper, pottery, jewelry, greeting cards, clocks, and dolls. When it first appeared in Upton's stories it was adventurous, silly, gallant, lovable, and slightly unsightly. Later on, the golliwog imagery was unkind, mean-spirited, and even more hideous. They were meant to not harm but due to the social climate at the time and the imagery displayed they were seen as racially insensitive.
