This outline is an idea after the visit of Human Right Museum. What we designed about our game is about the white terror political victims' stories inside the detention center. While I designed this game outline, I felt really sad and helpless. I clearly knew what happened to those victims, but I have no ways to help them. So I reflect about the society we are living in, we are living in a freely country, so we need to remember the history. History can be shape by anyone if we don't remember it.
While we visited the museum, I already designed the game story and background. I was inspired by Dr. Chen's life story, and Dr. Chen is our game's character. After we went back to school, we(our group) discussed about the outline. And I am the one who give ideas. The story of our game was designed by me, game idea(how to play) is also designed by me. I wrote the purpose, other, and main goal of the game.
In this few weeks, we've been to the "Aboriginal People Museum" in NTU. We've learned about the history of aboriginal people and know the injustice they faced from the past 400 years. This really shocked me, and that is why we planned this game. We planned to make a game that can clearly present the story and the history the aboriginal people face. So we designed to make this game in the modern day. By letting the players bethe aboriginal people, they can learn facts and stories, also connect to our driving question"How to make this world a better place?" If everyone can know the story behind those aboriginal people, they may think about how to change the world.
When we were in the museum, I lead my groupmates to find the answers. When we were doing the outlines, I did the the whole outline almost all by myself. I mean typing all the outlines by myself. And I also designed the setting of the game, create the characters of the game, and think of a story(background) of the game.
We are working on our third outline. Our third outline is about the migrants, and what we want to discuss is about the migrant worker facing discrimination in Taiwan. We had to discuss about the problem migrant workers will face and we also researched for real world examples. We had to improve our outline and we had to make the outline more clear, fit what the teacher requires us to do. We always had a low score in our outline, but I just don't know where is the problem, and now I finally know what should I improve. We should be more specific and list the things more detail in the outline. And I will try to reflect them in my next outline submission.
I contributed a lot in the outline because I wrote almost all the outline except for the feedback(I still did one). I also gave many ideas during the discussion. Such as how our game setting is going to look like, and what are the game options(players can choose options and pick the one that is the most suitable one) is going to look like. I gave my teammates a lot of support and also use my creativity to solve problems.
There few weeks we were working on our final outline, and our game is about the migrant worker facing discrimination, so what we want to do is to let more and more people know about what migrant workers face in Taiwan. This outline's idea is from a migrant worker from Vietnam, he was tricked by the employment agency, and became an illigal labor. Also, my job is "The Story Archivist", so my job is to do some research and write claim, argument, and evidence. I also had to do the real world example research, but I didn't do that during our outline working time. We thought that we would work in group to finish every part of our outline, so we finished other parts together but miss doing . So I think this is what I should improve, I had to know what is my role's job, and that is what I should improve in my next time work even in my future. I will first know what I should do and make sure I follow the instruction the teacher gives. And then I will write a schedule before I start my work.
Even though I didn't do a lot of work on my own role, I still contributed a lot in doing the outline making. Our whole group were like doing the work together, an I did the writing a lot. Half of the outline design was written by me. And also, I worked hard on the game choice designing. We had to design what our game's choice is going to be, and I said that we should design questions that really present the situation of migrant workers but not questions that are just normal game options.
We were working on the concept interview for our exhibition in the past week. We first interviewed a famiy member and asked some few questions about the the game's connection to or theme, the feelings after playing the demo, and what can we improve. After interviewed our family member(my sister), we chose quotes that can fit into themes, purpose, and game design. One thing I can improve is the questions. I was trying to design my questions that my sister can speak more and share more, but she still talked a little only, so I want to design a more wide, even more broad question to interview others. I think I did a great job in introducing our game with outline and canva game slides. My sister really understood the story and discussed the game with me. After we finished the concept interview, we started working on the qualitative diagram. This assignmet is a work that organize all thw quotes we had from our family members. We pick the ones we think fit thd themes best and label it.
I contributed in three parts of this group work. First is the interview, I interviewed my sister and write the quote so that our later work can began. The second is the first draft of the qualitiative diagram, I typed my own part of the quotes onto canva whitboard. The third part is that we discused about the parts we think that is important or realy helpful for our game process. We picked some of them and wrote it down onto canva whiteboard.
We first learned what is migrant worker's rights, and then we started on the game designing. We chose to make a text-based game. Through out our outline making process, we found out that many migrant workers are facing long working hour, low salary, and limit legal protection. So we decided to add a page specifically talk about this situation(a citation about the Ministry of Labor's survey). Thomas worked so hard making the game so he really contributed a lot and put a lot of effort inside the game. Finally we added some organizations inside the "learn more page" so that if there is any visitors are interested in spreading the awareness they can donate the organizations that support migrant workers. We had many tasks, we discussed about what kind of tasks we can put inside the game. After interview, we decided to make the game more realistic and combine real-world example. At the exhibition, we present it really well and the parents gave us good comments, and we deserve it. I learned to prepare everything I can find that is relative because you will never know when will it be use in the exhibition. The second thing is to always follow the rubrics, thew rubrics are really important and if we don't follow, the grade will be very low. The third thing is to do fully research. This is a little different than the first one. The first one is don't try to miss any information, and this one is do research is super important. Only data is trustworthy, so data and charts can well support our opinion and help to let the visitors feel deeper.
If I can redo the project, I will improve the tasks. Our tasks mostly focuses on the normal migrant workers' lives, but actually we should talk more about the abuse and limit legal protection the migrant workers face. So I will add two tasks about our main character being abuse by her boss and she doesn't know what channel can help her or protect her. Also, I want to add a background story about our main character was cheated by the manpower agency and became an illegal labor. This is actually a real-world example that happens in the past, so I want to let players know what the real situation is right now.
I would like to keep on letting other family members play this game. Some of my family members did not go to the exhibition, so I want them to also understand our project and spread the awareness. Also, I will keep on telling my friends and family members about the migrant workers' rights and the situation they face right now so they can understand this and help to spread the awareness.
