In this survey, we asked VIS students about their knowledge of SEL so we could determine where students are weak and where they (at least think) are strong at.
We learned about primary and secondary research, and how to avoid plagiarism.
We took a sample survey and tried to identify good and bad questions. Alas, we create a survey in groups.
We collect the data from each grade in groups. After reviewing their reply. to see what students' knowledge of SEL and the resources they're interested in, we present the results to the class.
We found out that most students think SEL skills are useful. Also, we added something like "Walmart bag" in the gender category, but it does not appear in the final survey, what a pity...... any sense of humor are not allowed, I think.
We have the mini exhibition as a practice of the real one, we were trying to do an interactive presentation of SEL skills.
Our group made a board, which we call "The Board of Imagination". Guests need to pick up a piece of paper from the bag where we put a lot of vocabulary words of emotions in, and they have to draw their idea of that emotion on a Post-it and stick it on the board.
I think the "board of imagination" idea is awesome. It's cool to see it full of ideas from different people at the end! I'm grateful that I came up with this idea at the last minute during our brainstorming.
This is the poster our group, Team ARM, created. We decided to make it look retro. This font, which looks like typed from a typewriter, works very well with this style.
First draft: Our first draft (don't have a picture) is in an awkward pinkish tone, and has four boxes of our game's rules. The words in those four boxes all have different lengths, so they are all in different font sizes, which looks quite weird.
Final draft: Our final draft has better colors, we(actually, I) made it to contain more information, and we deleted the boxes and made the font size the same. The title must be bold, so it looks a bit weird. I'm not 100% satisfied with this poster, but I believe it's much better than what we had at first.

Actually, I made 5 of those drafts to persuade my teammates that the skin color pinkish does not seem to look so good on a poster. Finally, they agreed to use this one, and I quickly deleted the first draft with infinite delight. I did not expect we would use that evil thing in our personal Google site, but I am afraid that if I download it, my laptop may get polluted.
I learned how to communicate with people who don't agree with my choice of color and common sense.
My group made the project overview card (I wrote the learning section!), which used to be a huge PVC wall, but it seems to be an A0 poster this time. Our poster is in joyful colors of pine green and brown, and there are a lot of plants on it, just like the setting of a fairy tale, which is the "I will never admit that this was made by my group" kind of work. Oh yeah, there's fungi on it for some reason.
I don't think this is the best version, all of my teammates agreed too, but the teachers chose this one, although there were 4 types of fonts and 4 kinds of brown on this overview card (AND EVEN FUNGI), which don't seem to be cooperating so well together.
All that organic matter that is taking over the page made me speechless when I first saw it. I never believed that plants could occupy the earth before, but after this substance was created, wow, I've completely changed my mind.
What I learned: To avoid this kind of work getting chosen next time, we should delete it before any teacher sees it.
Finally, we got to the final thing that we're facing this semester, something that everyone's afraid of...... EXHIBITION!
Our group (Team ARM) created a retro-looking poster introducing our project. This poster explained stuff about our game "Alternative Uses Brainstorm", where guests need to brainstorm non-ordinary uses of objects and write/draw them on an enormous piece of paper.
The teachers took weeks to teach us tons of presentation methods, such as power poses, body language, and responses to follow-up questions. But, the project itself is the most important part, these skills are only to make the project we worked on for this semester look even better. This also means, it can't make the project any more interesting if it is hollow from the inside out, which I wish our project was not.
The teachers said we can't let people draw violent stuff on the paper. But I think it's good to see people finally using their brains and creating something with humor, even if their creations are wild. Teenagers are maniacs, so they should make crazy artworks and articles to express emotions, instead of bullying or murdering others.
It was exhausting to include everyone's ideas, however, we still did it! And we all know it'll be more exhausting at "the" exhibition, but now we are prepared (at least I think so).
If you're a guest coming to the exhibition, welcome!
Whenever you decide to know more about brainstorming, please come to our group!
