For this assignment we had to list a problem we (or somebody close to us) had and write about what it was, how does it happen and some "solutions" to it.
I decided to write my topic about sexual harassment (specifically, sexual coercion), as a friend of mine have suffered from it. I felt like this connected to my old PBL class topic where we try to advocate for social justice and how in that class we need to do research for our topics too.
I asked my parents for some words I didn't know and they gave me some criticism on some of my wording so I went back and changed it. I feel like my topic was a lot more serious than other people in my class (those who did mundane topics like traffic) but It's something I am passionate about so I chose it anyway.
I think I could've added more details to my answers and rephrased some sentences to be more exact, while also bringing up the specific scenario that my friend experienced as an example to maybe demonstrate what i learned from the research better.
For this assignment both classes was assigned a debate topic (and each group is either against the topic or defending the topic). After discussing which turn everyone was in the debate format, we went up against the other class.
I was the person who had to collect information for my group, while I think I did ok at the job, I feel like I could've also written more or compiled the sources more neatly for my teammates and when Jamie was absent on debate day I could've stepped up to her part but I was too nervous.
This assignment reminded me of english class as we also had to do a debate for that class too, except we each had to speak up individually and there was less teamwork involved. This assignment also relates back to PBL as it could help improve my communication skills as I would have to interview my organization's members for more information and this is good practice for talking in chinese.
Despite my nervousness, I felt like I had done good research to find plentiful sources and reached out to my teammates actively for support and did work outside of class. Before going on stage, I had asked one of my classmates to give me more areas for improvement and they said that I should find some more information on the other side of the argument to see what kind of counter-points I could make, using that, I tried to pitch the idea to the team and searched for some sources that backed up the other sides' argument.
For this assignment everyone decided their future career and then interviewed somebody with that career over the weekends to learn more about their path and so that they could plan their future well, then calculating expenses and what they would do in a separate doc.
While the interview went fine, I felt like I could've asked more in depth questions or just more questions, since I only asked around 4 questions. Another improvement I could've made was to make sure my audio was clear since that day it was really windy and that made the audio hard to hear.
I feel like this could connect to my PBL class because I have a deeper knowledge about how to email/contact and interview somebody. Since I need to partner with an organization for my project deliverable, this could come in handy to seem more professional. I also feel like this assignment could connect to my geography class as right now I have a big final project thats heavy on research, so knowing what to search for is a big skill i need to have, and in this assignment's interview, I also needed to know what crucial questions to ask.
This assignment reminded me of when we had to send an email to our community partner in PBL, I had to get multiple checks with my teacher to make sure our email wasn't unprofessional or demanding.
Although I'm satisfied with my final submitted work, next time I could maybe do the interview earlier in the week so that I can work on the transcript and slides a bit more and polish them. I also asked my parents for what other questions I could ask the neurologist I was interviewing, and she gave me some suggestions that I could filter through and decide on (like the question where I asked if she thought AI could be used in this field).
