My goal this semester is to learn more about how to pace my writing, how to make dialogue more natural, and focus on how to write characters' internal thoughts better.
My final project of the semester was a research paper that had to be related to movies. My research paper is about how cults are depicted in movies and compare it to real life cult interaction and activity.Â
I feel like I could've cut down on the plot more and put more focus onto character analysis, since cults psychologically manipulate someone's thinking and decision making, and I could do an in depth look at the body language of the actors/cinematography the movie decided to go with to show unsettling moments etc.. Doing more research for how cults interact in real life helped me learn how to do more research by myself and deduct when a source is useful and accurate. This helped me in situations like PLB where I needed to do research on our group's topic and we had to look through a lot of sources and websites and news articles to compare how trustworthy they are.
Last year, in English class, it was focused a lot on movie genres and detective fiction, but mostly the acting and cinematography of it all. But this semester I can build on that understanding of movie techniques and depictions by watching films on my own and writing an actual analysis of the interesting details I've noticed and writing it in a research paper format. In this semester I learned to manage time better since we had a lot of tests/quizzes and I had to find time to succeed even with a tight schedule. I wish to be able to bring myself to do more distributed practice than mass practice. This year, I was more open to criticism and actively seeked my peer's feedback on my research paper since they can spot mistakes and weak points I wouldn't have noticed. The criticism they gave helped me improve my research paper and motivated me to push for better.
