Unit 1 - Theatre
Our first project centered around theatre play was a formative where we acted out a scene we chose.
I partnered up with 4 other classmates to do a dramatic play set in the ER.
Our final project was a summative formatted just like the formative.
This play was much better in my opinion because we learned a lot from our formative and improved. This time I paired up with 2 of my classmates.
What we learned from it
This unit helped us understand how to make our plays more compelling to the audience. We learned about body movements (including Laban movements, which are basically the tone of our movements), we also learned beats are sections of the script's story objective, as well as what parts to add emphasis on. Even though our on stage performance is more important, our understanding of the script is what supports our performance, which includes learning how to analyze a script and characters so we can determine how to present that character.
Unit 2 - Detective Fiction
At the beginning of this unit, we chose a book from the Detective Poirot series and a book from the Sherlock Holmes series. We learned how to analyze the story structure of an average detective fiction novel and what elements (such as tropes and themes) to look out for. This was all in preparation for our final project, which was a detective fiction genre story written fully by ourselves.
These two assignments had a section where we could analyze the themes of justice and law in our stories. Justice was our topic of the semester, so this gave us a starting point to learn more about what kinds of justice there are and how justice plays a part in the story and theming especially in detective fiction.
In part 1 of our final assessment, we only had to plan out our story and each aspect of it that we covered. This includes our characters, how our story connects with justice and law (themes), settings, tropes, story structure, and clues. This part was vital because we could receive feedback for our actual—and much more important—part 2.
In part 2 of our final assessment, we had to focus on writing out our story, this was pretty difficult because laying clues and keeping the story structure intact was hard for many students, for a lot of us, we ended up with stories that are 5-10 pages, but some classmates went beyond and some fell short. Overall, this assignment was challenging but also fun to write in our style and get the opportunity to write longer stories that can let us have more freedom.
