Blockout project to make a level for Unreal Tournament 4 using the Unreal Editor.
Project Roles: Level Designer
Project duration: Sept 2019 - Nov 2019 (8 weeks)
Team Size: 1 dev
Engine: Unreal Editor
When making this level I started out with doing research into what Unreal Tournament's gameplay focused on. From this research I created the level with a focus on movement and medium ranged encounters to encourage the use of the: Flak Cannon, Minigun, and the Link Gun.
While concepting I wanted the level to have an industrial type feel to it. To find reference I went out and collected material by photographing in an industrial area of my city. While collecting pictures I snapped a picture of a bridge while my camera was upside-down. I really liked this picture and made a paint-over to make a first sketch of the meat grinder.
However I decided against that meat grinder in relation to scope due to major overhauls in the level and several first versions being made, tested, and scrapped. I found the most striking part of the upside-down bridge to be the pillars, I wanted to preserve at least this part of the paint-over and integrated the pillar shape into the bridge over the main lane. I also extended the tops in order to give crouch-height cover to allow players to slide to cover since the bridge had a long line of sight.
Throughout this project I recorded iterations of the level, these can be seen in the Gifs. I started out by making blockouts of the level sketches and testing these out. I went through several iterations before finding a version that worked after setting up a modular kit to build the level out of.
I then iterated on the level slowly adding pickups, weapons, and signposting as iterations went along. In this process I made major changes to all parts of the level, but most notable are the meat grinder; which was heavily iterated upon and overhauled several times to facilitate flow, verticality, and to break line of sight. I also majorly adjusted the height of the level and iterated on the level to facilitate this height by; facilitating jumps to the correct height, and breaking and opening line of sight.
