9. Engage

ENGAGE: Bias (15 minutes)

Materials: Bias powerpoint (from Create the Change curriculum by Emily Frank, MD) - print powerpoint with each slide on one piece of paper.

• Introduction to bias (5 minutes)
  • Explain that bias is how the attitude(s) of the creator influences the consumer.
  • Flash up a cigarette and anti-cigarette ad side by side (from the "Bias powerpoint". Ask for each: what is this trying to make you think? How does it do it?
• Bias gallery walk (10 minutes)
  • Hang up slides from Bias powerpoint around the classroom.
  • Ask students to walk around the room and write down examples of bias (5 minutes).
  • Have students share out. Ask if students can think of any other places they have seen bias (5 minutes).
