Developing a Research Goal and Questions

Objective: To develop a unifying research goal and a set of research questions that will help us understand the root causes of our focus issue and advocate for the changes that we want to make.

"Let’s summarize what we have done so far. We have talked about different factors causing our focus issue. Now we need to figure out what specifically we want to measure. In action research, it is very important to be able to identify pieces of information that are going to be important in helping us make a difference."

ENGAGE: Knowledge is Power (30 minutes)

Materials: Knowledge is Power scenarios

Split youth into two groups. Have each group plan out a skit using scenarios in which research is used to make an argument. Use the Knowledge is Power Role Play Scenarios for students to work from, or you can make up your own scenarios.
Give youth 5-10 minutes to prepare their skit. Each skit has to answer the questions:
- What is the problem being addressed?
- What is the solution?
- How is research used to advocate for a solution?
Have youth present their skit to the entire group
