Presenting Findings

Objectives: Learn elements of a good presentation, craft a “hook” to capture an audience’s attention, practice being a public speaker, and create a presentation for key findings and recommendations

Materials: Hooks handout, Planning a Presentation handout

Brainstorm Hooks (20 minutes)
- Distribute the “Hooks” handout to teams of 1-3. Each team should come up with possible hooks for each category relevant to our research project and pick one or two that they would be willing to demonstrate. Instruct some teams to create hooks specifically for a youth audience, and other teams to create hooks specifically for an adult audience. (10 minutes)
- Once they complete the sheet, teams should briefly demonstrate their hook. (5 minutes)
- After all the teams present, ask the following reflection questions: (5 minutes)
  - What hooks felt most natural for you?
  - Which ones felt fake or hard to do?
  - Were there any hooks that we didn’t use or rarely use?
  - How were the youth and adult hooks different?
  - Which hooks do you think would work best for our presentation?
Presentation Work (30 minutes - at least)
- Divide students into two groups - create one presentation for a mostly adult audience and one for a mostly youth audience on your issue.
- Pass out the “Planning Presentation” handout. Each group should complete the worksheet to create an outline for their presentation. Circulate between groups to help students. Key elements to include are:
  - Who you are
  - How you picked the issue
  - How the research was conducted
  - Key results
  - Recommendations
  - Next steps
  - Time for Questions
- Teams should prepare all handouts and visuals they will need for the presentations.
