Objective: Students will compile their survey data into a format that will allow them to begin analyzing and interpreting their findings.
Warm-Up: Ice Cream Tally (10 minutes)
Materials: Green and blue post-its
- Write the following survey question on the board or on a piece of chart paper at the front of the classroom, large enough so that everyone can see: What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? A. Chocolate B. Vanilla C. Strawberry D. Other (feel free to use any survey question that will engage your students)
- Make four columns on the board, one for each answer choice (A, B, C, D)
- Distribute green post-its to female students and blue post-its to male students. Ask students to come to the front of the classroom and place their post-it beneath their answer choice.
- As a class, calculate:
- The total number of respondents (total number of post-its), total number of girls, total number of boys
- The proportion of total respondents who voted for each response
- The proportion of girls and of boys who voted for each response
- Is there a difference between how girls and boys voted? How do you interpret this difference?
