What is suspicious activity? Why is it important?

"Suspicious activity" is an event that is out of the ordinary, or one that should not be occurring.

When we see and report suspicious activity to law enforcement immediately, we can help prevent or interrupt crime.

Please call the Memphis Police Department Non-Emergency Number (901) 545-COPS (2677) immediately to report suspicious activity. If an emergency, call 911.

Do NOT be reluctant to call. Trust your instincts. Your call to MPD to report suspicious activity is NOT a burden.

You should NEVER attempt to apprehend a suspect. This is the law enforcement officer’s job.

How do we know what is out of the ordinary?

By getting to know our neighbors, their habits, and their household composition, and by being alert and observant. This makes it easier for each of us to recognize and report any suspicious or concerning activities occurring in our neighborhood.

Examples of unusual activities to watch for include:

Someone running from a car or home
Any unusual noise that you cannot explain, including someone screaming, sounds of fighting, breaking glass, pounding
Someone going door-to-door in the neighborhood or peering into windows and parked cars that are not their own
A child resisting the advances of an adult
A person who seems to have no purpose wandering in the neighborhood
Vehicles moving slowly and aimlessly, or without lights, through neighborhoods, around schools, or in parking lots
Business transactions conducted from vehicles (This could involve the sale of drugs or stolen goods.)
Offers to sell merchandise at ridiculously low prices (It’s probably stolen.)
Property carried by persons on foot at an unusual hour or place, especially if the person is running
Big screen TV or other property being pushed down the street in a trash cart
Property being removed from closed businesses or residences known to be unoccupied
A stranger entering a neighbor’s home or apartment that appears to be unoccupied
People who change their behavior when they notice they have been seen
