Student Survey

Textbook & Course Materials Student Survey

In Spring 2020, I worked with two students from our Trinity College StudentPIRG to develop a textbook and course materials survey designed to capture the effects of textbook and materials cost on education, purchasing behaviors, course completion, and student success. Some of the survey questions were adapted, with permission, from the Florida Virtual Campus 2018 Student Textbook and Course Materials Survey and the Allan Hancock College Student Survey. Our survey is different from most in that it includes demographic questions that will allow us to disaggregate the data by race-ethnicity, and first-generation, independent degree program, transfer, and international student statuses to determine if there are students who are disproportionately affected by the cost of course materials.

The survey was released in Spring 2023. Over 400 students took part. The results of the survey will be used to increase faculty awareness, engagement, and adoption of OER and to build buy-in among select administrators.
