Science

Week beginning 6th July, 2020 - Science Careers

This week I would like you to investigate a career in which you would need to use lots of Science. This is so important at the moment as I am sure you can appreciate just how important nurses, doctors, paramedics and all the other health workers are. There are also scientists currently working to find a vaccine for Covid-19. Science is so important!

Your task is to find out about jobs which use Science. They don't have to work for the NHS! (Not all Scientists wear lab coats!). There are so many jobs which use Science. Find out all about what is involved in the job, what you need to do to get the job, what skills are useful etc.

Then, present your work any way you want. You may decide to produce a PowerPoint for example. Or, you may prefer to make an information leaflet, or a poster.

This website is such a great resource - there are so many different jobs to read about!

Week beginning 22nd June, 2020 - Change 4 Life Week!

This weeks learning will focus on the following

  • How can we eat healthily?

  • Why is exercise so important for our bodies?

Healthy Eating

You may remember the Eatwell Plate poster which explains the different food groups. I would like you to produce your own version of the poster - you could do this practically using food from around the house, you could produce a Powerpoint with each section having a hyperlink or you could use your drawing skills!

Your work should not just include examples of food from each group, but information about why each food group is good for our body. For example, carbohydrates are good for us because they give us energy. You may need to use the internet to remind yourself of this information.

Click here for a copy of The Eatwell Plate poster and here to play a fun interactive game version!

Healthy, fit bodies

Watch the video as an introduction and then think about what would happen to your body if you did not do any exercise.

Spend some time researching the effects exercise has on your body. Find out how it helps your bones, your muscles and even your mind!

Present your work however you like. You could do a Powerpoint, a video, a poster or an information leaflet. Whatever you produce, it must try and persuade people to do more exercise by explaining just how important it is for the human body.

This is a useful website with lots of information to help.

Week beginning 15th June, 2020

Great Science Share

This Tuesday (16th June) is a national day for doing and sharing Science! Look on the Great Science Share website for some ideas and try and do some Science at home on the day!

There are lots of live lessons taking place throughout the day. Find the schedule by clicking here.

You could even try and earn a special 'Super Scientist' badge by clicking here and completing the form on the website.

Properties and Changes of Materials

Lesson 1 - Properties of Materials

  1. Download the lesson pack by clicking the picture above.

  2. Work through the Powerpoint. It is about describing different materials and thinking about their properties.

Activities

  1. Go around your house looking for as many different materials as you can. Make a list.

  2. Complete the activity sheet above (or make a similar one of your own). You will need to think about why the material has been chosen to make that item. We call this suitability.

Lesson 2 - Keeping Cool

  1. Download the lesson pack by clicking the picture above.

  2. Work through the Powerpoint. It is about describing different materials and thinking about their properties.

Activities

Ice lollies - I have been eating a lot of these in the sunny weather! Your task this week is to design a product that will keep an ice lolly cool for as long as possible. Use materials from around the house. See the design brief below....

Look for different materials around the house and then make a prediction as to which material will be the most suitable as an insulator.

You should know what 'conductor' and 'insulator' mean by the end of this lesson.

Lesson 3 - Dissolving

  1. Download the lesson pack by clicking the picture above.

  2. Work through the Powerpoint. It is about dissolving and learning what soluble and insoluble mean.

Activities

Using some household items, investigate a range of materials to find out if they dissolve. You could make a prediction before the investigation and then record the results in a table. Make sure you know what soluble and insoluble mean.

Lesson 4 - Separating Mixtures

  1. Download the lesson pack by clicking the picture above.

  2. Work through the Powerpoint. It is about the processes in which we can separate different mixtures.

Activities

Click on the photo to be taken to the worksheet. Using any of the items you have in your house, complete as much of the table as you can.
