Blog Idea Topics:
Make sure you capture photos and videos in the studios / rehearsals to demonstrate how you are experimenting and developing these concepts. Remember as well as written research you could also do something more practical such as creating your own review video of different mics in the studio, or a tutorial video explaining what an interface is and how to use it?
PRODUCTION Research
Microphones at college - What are they for? Compare and contrast them - alternatives? Different types of mics (Dynamic vs Condenser), Polar patters, Phantom power.
Audio Interfaces - What are they and what do they do? Why are the studio ones so expensive? What are the optimum settings for recording?
Vocal Recording
Vocal Editing - Flex Pitch/Time editing functions and basic vocal mixing effects.
Recording Guitars - compare mics vs DI and modelling / profiling systems
Recording Drums - close mic vs Glynn Johns
Recording Plan - see Project 5 brief.
Music to media after watching this video.
PERFORMANCE Research
Create a ‘Mood Board’ where you collate, discuss and share musical influences for a band.
Review your first solo performance and planning your next one. Evaluate your choices for your 2nd solo performance.
Create blog posts for each original song discussing, explaining and evaluating how you used the songwriting stimuli / style.
How to use keyboards / synths in pop / rock music.
Leading a rehearsal plan, video and risk assessment - see Project 5 brief.
Research Live Sound (PA) Systems. This video will help - we will also do a practical live sound day.
What is live streaming and how do you do it? We will do a session on this to help.
Blog post about the rehearsal you planned and led, presenting your planning materials, video evidence of the rehearsal and evaluating how the session went and what you gained from the experience.
(Check Course website / Teams Posts for session content)
After Half Term you will continue to add to your blog documenting and evaluating what your studio production work and songwriting / performance work.
Studio Hardware - Microphones and Microphone Recording Techniques
Task 1: In your research blog, present your own research into the different types of microphones used in recording live music in a studio recording. Include photos of different dynamic and condenser mics, microphone polar patterns, examples of setting up microphones correctly in the recording studio, etc..
Useful Resources
The following playlist of YouTube Tutorial Videos will help you understand and guide you through the following:
Lyrics - stimulus/technique used - inspiration for this, meaning of the lyrics if any, use of metaphor etc...
Style/genre inspirations - please add artists/bands and some examples of songs. Comment on these, why they are inspirational? Compare tracks and how you may use elements of these for your song.
Rhythmic idea - Explain with reference to the notated idea your use and development of the rhythm given. Give musical examples of the use of this rhythm. Was this rhythm used in one or more instruments and how. when?
Playing techniques - what particular playing techniques did you employ for each stimulus? For example use of melisma, improvisation techniques, vibrato, tapping, shredding, sweeping, use of scales, arpeggio's, articulation etc...
Reflection/evaluation - continuous reflection on your development of your stimulus with reference to the above. Add pictures/audio/video of development and comment on this with regards to the musical elements, your development and playing techniques.
Any video's of performance work, explain and evaluate in detail:
What went well? What didn't go so well? Explain in detail regarding musical elements - structure, instrumental arrangement, tempo, rhythm, harmony, melody, lyrics, expression/contrast (dynamics, use of articulation), playing techniques, communication within the band and to the audience and stage presence.
How are you now going to develop each stimulus with regard to your reflection above?
What will be the plan for each stimulus in your next rehearsal?
Explain the term "Live Streaming". What does this mean? In which contexts does Live Streaming occur?
What specialist equipment do you need?
