Audition Portfolio Tasklist
The purpose of this project is to develop solo audition repertoire which you will need to audition for university, professional recording work, bands, pit orchestras etc.
Over the first two terms you must prepare two pieces for live performance in front of an audience. These pieces should showcase your technical and expressive abilities as a versatile musician and performer.
For each performance you will include on your website: -
an existing YouTube or audio clip of your chosen solo performance. Comment on the performance style of the recorded version you have uploaded, noting any stylistic and expressive details in the performance that you particularly admire and are aiming to achieve
your Rationale for choosing this piece; why have you chosen to perform it and what are the specific technical and expressive challenges for you as a developing performer?
Programme Notes about your chosen piece, based on research you have undertaken, including contextual details (genre/style, date of composition etc) and the composer/songwriter/artist. Explain why you have chosen to perform this piece and the challenges it presents to you as a performer.
Artist Research - include a paragraph about the artist/composer of your chosen piece (avoid repeating your programme notes). What genres are they noted for, what distinguishes their performance style and technique from other performers? What do you particularly admire about their musicianship? Provide examples...
A Rehearsal Blog, including videos of your rehearsal process. Your videos should clearly demonstrate your progress over time, should be short and focus on specific areas of your practice. Add comments to explain your practice methods and include brief evaluations of your achievements, what you plan to do next etc
Your final uploaded and published live recorded performance, with an evaluation of the outcomes of your work
You should spend the first term working towards a solo performance on your instrument or voice.
You will publish a live recorded performance of this solo performance on your website and / or YouTube channel as an example of your ability. This will contribute towards your performance portfolio and Special Skills development for Unit 7.
You can perform on your own, with an accompanist, or a backing track. If you use a backing track it must be a minus 1 backing track which does not have your part on it.
Your solo performance piece must not be an accompaniment or rhythm part (it might include moments of this), but you should be performing the main part / melody / solo line the majority of the time.
Speak to your course tutors and 1:1 instrumental / vocal teacher to select appropriate, challenging but achievable material for your solo performances and to work on the piece.
You should spend the second term working towards a different solo performance on your instrument or voice. It should demonstrate progress from your Term 1 Solo Performance. The point of this is to develop audition repertoire which you will need to audition for University, professional bands, pit orchestras etc.
