Learn this piece as a great starting point and make sure you learn to play the melody too!
You can improvise over this whole piece with the F Blues Scale - F, Ab, Bb, B, C, Eb.
However, start taking your improvisation further! Use dominant arpeggios for each of the other chord root notes. E.g. play C, E, G, Bb on the C7 chords.
Original - Tune in at 0.30
Listen to what you can do with it.
Dm7 sections use the D Dorian Mode (D, E, F, G, A, B, C)
Ebmaj7 section use Eb Lydian (Eb, F, G, A, Bb, C, D) - Eb Major scale will work too.
Dmaj7 section use D major scale.
Use Bb Dorian mode over this one - Bb, C, Db, Eb, F, G, Ab.
This tune is much easier to improvise over if you stop thinking about scales and use arpeggios of the chords!
Cmaj7 = C, E, G, B. E7 = E, G#, B, D A7 = A, C#, E, G Dm7 = D, F, A, C Am = A, C, E
D7 = D, F#, A, C. F = F, A, C. Fm = F, Ab, C. Em, E, G, B. G7 = G, B, D, F.
Mostly use Bb major scale = Bb, C, D, Eb, F, G, A.
However where you see Bb7/D you can use Bb mixolydian = Bb, C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab
Em7, Am7, D7 to Gmaj7 = Gmajor scale.
G7 to Cmaj7 = Cmajor scale
E7 to Am = Aminor (harmonic on the E7)
F#m7(b5), B7 to Em - Eminor (harmonic)
Again where chords go outside of the key try using arpeggios on them - F7 A7, Em7(b5), Bb7#11, A7#9, Ab7#11, C7, F#dim7.
Notice how this is in 5 time with a subdivision of 3 and 2.
