Our sample preparation facilities include: two manual grinding/polishing wheels, slow saw, mounting press (TOPTECH), optical microscope (OLYMPUS), high-precision electronic balance (CHROMTECH), and electro-polishing setup. Most samples can be prepared into high quality for further analysis, e.g. SEM, EBSD, TEM, nanoindentation
We have a MATSUZAWA micro-hardness testing machine (5~1000 gf) equipped with Vickers and Knoops indenters for hardness and fracture testing. The. We also have a SHIMADZU EZ-LX table-top testing machine (500~5000 N) with rigs for compression, tension, and 3/4PT-bending testing of small specimen
We have a selective laser melting (虎門科技) printer for metallic additive manufacturing. The printer is equipped with a high-power laser (up to 500 W) for printing large workpiece (300 x 300 mm). We also have a alumina tube furnace for heat treatments up to 1400 °C (尚偉科技)
We have access to various SEMs, FIBs, and TEMs through 中山貴儀系統. The SEMs (Zeiss Supra 55, Gemini 450) are equipped with Oxford Instrument EBSD (Symmetry I) and EDX detectors. The TEM (Talos FX200) is capable of doing HRTEM, NBD, and 3D-EDX analysis . We have a Hitachi NX2000 dual-beam FIB, and is planning install a new FIB before summer.
We have access to various lathe, milling, drilling, and CNC machines located in our newly-refurbished mechanical workshop located at 工院 & 環工大樓. In addition, we have laser cutting machine and wire-EDM which are often used for removing printed samples from base plates and cutting precise specimen. Students in the group can be trained on any instruments if research required
We have a comfy couch for students and our mascots (Porcu not in his best condition though). Our lab is not just a working area but also a cozy place to interact with other students, discussion, and rest. We have a projector for regular Friday movie lunch (after group meeting)
