Project Brief
"Ungeriget" is an augmented reality (AR) graffiti game that activates young long-term inpatients in their everyday life and enables them to make the hospital their own.
This is a coorperation project between The Royal Danish Akademy and Rigshospitalet in Coopenhagen. Students have to design a digital universe on the app 'SpilleRiget', which aims to facilitate a social life, more physical activity and better mental health for long-term hospitalized young people aged 14-17 at BørneRiget (Rigshospitalet).

Development Process
Through a longer process, where we e.g. using questionnaire and semi-structured interviews with a former inpatient, experts and stakeholders to great success, we worked towards finding some core challenges to focus on. We took the time to immerse ourselves in this part of the process, and learned as much as we could about the "wicked problem" our case was, in order to uncover the maximum possible perspectives on the case qua Kees Dorst's frame creation (Dorst, 2015). It resulted in us formulating a codex for the project, with the following core challenges we would continue to work on:
Network formation across the inpatients
Physical and mental activation
Utilization of the hospital's framework and the situations of the inpatients
Opportunities for the young to create and personalize
Via the lotus flower method, we sketched out these challenges in the form of possible solution areas, and by e.g. to ask “How might we?” questions and drawing on our collected knowledge from the stakeholders, we were able to narrow down and make our concept more concrete. This resulted in a proposed solution, which we have been able to concretize through further interviews with both a game expert and constructive criticism from two former inmates. With illustrations, mockups and a trailer, all this has ended with our solution: UngeRiget
UngeRiget
On admission, the patients are assigned a profile at UngeRiget, which connects the young patients with each other and creates contact across the board from the start.
Main machanism
The central part of the universe is an AR graffiti game. In the corridors, the inmates fight in teams to paint the largest area with their team colour, and in rooms and common areas there is room for creative expression.
The paint for the game is earned by finding and opening digital packages that are hidden around the Children's Kingdom. In the packages, the inpatients can send messages to each other, receive greetings from relatives and knowledge from experts and former inpatients.
So that everyone can participate, the entire universe can be accessed both physically via AR and lying in bed through a digital 360° representation of BørneRiget.

Formulating concepts:
Create initial concept in collaboration with team members
2D artist:
Create all the concept arts for idea development and main machnism. Based on the concept arts, create the illustration & manga for process introduction and final solution.
Create the animation frames for the video
Create the 2D character images for all the team members and the person who joined the interview
