Lay made his film debut in November 2015 with a supporting role in the Chinese romantic comedy movie Ex-Files 2: The Backup Strikes Back, and later won the Best Supporting Actor Award at the 2016 China Britain Film Festival for his performance.
In August 2018, he starred in Huang Bo's commercially and critically successful directorial debut film The Island, where he received acclaim for his performance, and subsequently won the Best Supporting Actor award for his role at the 25th Huading Awards in 2019.
In June 2021, he was announced as the male lead for the Bad Monkey Production No More Bets, his first main lead role in a film. Following its release in the summer of 2023, No More Bets became a huge hit at the Chinese box office, grossing a total of 3.85 billion yuan (~USD 550 million), making it the highest grossing Chinese film in Summer 2023.
Lay's performance in the film earned him critical acclaim and a nomination for Best Male Actor at the 37th Hundred Flowers Awards in 2024.
He is set to star alongside veteran actors Shu Qi and Tony Leung Ka Fai in the upcoming Crime Suspense film 黎明时分见 ( lit.trans See You at Dawn) and a drama film titled 不说话的爱 (lit.trans Silent Love) where he will be playing the lead role of a deaf and mute father. Both films are currently in post-production.
