Lay made his small screen debut in May 2016, in the Chinese television series To Be A Better Man, and received positive reviews for his acting as aspiring chef Xiao Cai. He was later nominated for the Best New Actor Award at the 22nd Huading Awards in 2017 for his performance.
In July 2016, he starred in action mystery drama The Mystic Nine, and was praised for his portrayal of the Chinese opera singer Er Yuehong. He subsequently starred in a movie spin-off of the television series titled The Mystic Nine Side Story: Flowers Bloom in February, which focused on Er Yuehong's character.
He has also acted in other Chinese dramas, including starring roles in Operation Love (2017), Ming Dynasty (2019), and The Golden Eyes (2019), and even made a special appearance as Er Yuehong's apprentice, Xie Yuchen in the sequel to the Lost Tomb series, Tomb of the Sea in 2018.
His most recent dramas are supporting roles in Crime Crackdown (2021) and Challenges at Midlife (2022).
