The Overlooked was exactly that, overlooked.
From a distance it looks like more dirt than rock and some of the areas are obscured by trees. Its a huge area that will deliver triple digit route counts for sure.
The grade spread here will be large with everything from 5.fun, to 5.12 and even harder lines.
The Overlooked will surely be a destination for climbers in the HWY50 corridor.
This area is UNDER ACTIVE DEVELOPMENT....

Some things to consider:
- Trails. The trail is well laid and starts at the south east end of the parking lot. Approach time varies depending on what zone you are heading to within the Overlooked area.
- This area contains Traditional, Mixed, Sport, and tons of Bouldering potential in the vicinity. It offers climbing for all types of rock wrestlers! Descriptions of routes will be clear on what type of climb it is, and have bolt counts, protection suggestion, and anchor types as time allows
- Please don't put this place on blast. This area is quite visible from highway 50, Mountain Project is a great resource, and also bringer of poor behavior, which can cause access issues and more unfortunate consequences.
Please do not think this implies any sort of ownership of this place, an amazing public resource that is ours to share.
- The area was burned through by the Caldor fire. Just as with any area that has had fire run through it. BE CAREFUL. The trail from parking to crag has mostly been cleaned up, but still has some obstacles that need clearing. Wind can bring down branches, so if windy keep that in mind. This is still true 3+ years later.
- Grades are approximate. All grades here are just suggestions based upon FA's feeling.... Then refined by more climbers input. They will change, and your feedback helps provide more accurate information. (use the feedback form on this site! button is up top)Typically, the older the climb, the more accurate the rating has become.
We use the .xx +/- system. .xx- is a/b, .xx is b/c, and .xx+ is c/d. after enough time a proper letter grade is assigned.
- Anchors. All new Anchorage will be all stainless hardware usually consisting of 3/8 SS wedge bolts and SS hangers. if its a rappel anchor is will have quick links or rings and if a lower off anchor, vertical offset rams horn and quick link to carabiner below or mussy hooks.
- Loose rock is real. Be aware and belayers should wear helmets. Be careful on ledges above climbs to not knock things down.
- There may be fixed lines you come across. Do not assume they are safe. You can climb routes that have fixed lines but may take some finagling at the anchor as the fixed line may be tied into the fixed gear up top. Bring QD’s to clip bolts under fixed gear at the anchor if needed.
- The longest bolted climbs here require ?? draws not including potential anchor gear.
- 70m rope is advised.
- Feel free to use a brush and clean things.
- Pack it in pack it out. Please keep this area free of garbage and other trash. First time climbing here we saw a momma bear and her cubs so a reminder this is also someones home who really likes snacks.
