CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING
A wound is any damage or break in the surface of the skin. Wounds can be surgical, an incision made during surgery, or due to trauma. Injuries can result from falls, accidents, fights, bites, or weapons. They can be cuts, lacerations or abrasions. Sometimes these wounds are not very deep and some wounds do not heal at all. When wounds are exposed to hazards due to tissue contamination with foreign substances such as bacteria, dirt, and fragments of clothing that can cause severe local or general build-up of infection. Certain types of wounds are more likely to get infections, but wound infections can be prevented.
Onion (Allium cepa L.) is the integral components of culinary preparations. Besides being used as condiments, the medicinal properties add value to their importance. It is considered one of the oldest medicines in the world used as traditional or folk medicine, in Ayurveda, Unani, Homeopathy and other forms of medicine for treating numerous diseases reported from several countries According to traditional medical literature, they are a source of many vitamins and are useful in fever, dropsy, cattarrh and chronic bronchitis, mixed with common salt and onions are a domestic remedy in colic and scurvy. Roasted or otherwise they are applied as a poultice to indolent boils, bruises, wounds, etc., to relieve hot sensations and applied to the navel for dysentery and fever, (Vijay Mahajan, 2017).
In this study, the researcher would like to test the efficacy of onion (allium cepa L.), by conducting this research, the onion (allium cepa L.) extracts will be tested in adult albino rats, either sex, and wounds were created by sterilized materials.
This research aims to answer the following questions:
1. Is the product effective as treatment for wounds?
2. Are there any side effects or irritations caused by the product?
3. How long is the product’s shelf-life, based on its odor, color, and texture?
H0 There is no significant difference among the treatments
H1 There is a significant difference between the treatments
This research is envisioned for people who acquire wounds of any type. This is used for healing general wounds. This research will be made at the researcher’s home, Purok Mabinuligon, Brgy Upper Klinan, Polomolok, South Cotabato. The product will be tested and applied on the wounds made on the surface of the skin of albino white mice. The research is estimated to last up to 30 days upon the start of making the product.
The following terms are defined operationally and theoretically to fully understand this study.
Onion- Onions inhibit platelet aggregation by blocking thromboxane synthesis, reduce glucose in diabetics and may contain a natural enzyme inhibitor that blocks the growth of cancer cells. Raw slices may be applied for insect bites or as a poultice for bruises or sprains. Operationally, the extracts from this plant is one of the main ingredients of this study.
Effectiveness- is the capability of producing a desired result or the ability to produce desired output. Operationally, it is one of the statement of the problems in this study.
Shelf-life- is the length of time for which an item remains usable, fit for consumption, or saleable. Operationally, it is one of the statement of the problem in this study.
Side effects- is a secondary, typically undesirable effect of a drug or medical treatment. Operationally, it is one of the statement of the problem in this study.
Wound- is a break or opening in the skin often occur because of an accident or injury.
Wound healing- is a complex process in which the skin, and the tissues under it, repair themselves after injury. Operationally, this is what this study will be used for.
The researcher gives importance to the following:
To the community, to provide safe and effective treatment for people with wounds.
To the school, to have a product that is safe and effective for the teachers, students, and school staff that attain abrasion wounds and to set vision for next researchers about the competency of Onion to cure wounds.
To the field of research, to provide a dependable source of data and evidence for future researchers with the same topic.
