The world of Starfall is affected heavily by the titular comet, which passes Crecia once every 4000 years for 12 days and 12 nights. During this duration the world is forever changed, resulting in an impact that inevitably ends in the complete collapse of every civilization, leaving the survivors to start back at the beginning.
Almost nothing is known about the past ages before the most recent Starfall because hardly any records survive the ensuing chaos. The small amount that does survive usually falls into myth and legend before long, as a relic of a forgotten time.
- Every 4000 years a comet crosses the sky for 12 days and 12 nights, and the magic from it alters the world.
- This change is always drastic enough to bring about a cataclysmic change to the people and causes the downfall of all civilization, and within a few centuries they essentially start back at the beginning, separated and forced to regroup and build civilizations up again.
- No civilization has ever lasted from one starfall event to the next.
- The 4000 year periods are known as Ages. The world is currently estimated to be in its 11th Age.
- Few records last past an age in the ensuing chaos, and thus very little is known about anything from the previous ages. The Bjorsine are the only power with much knowledge of past ages because of their record keeping and the relative protection under the mountains of Iskjoldur, however even their information is fragmented and not far in the past.
Ages are considered to be the period of time between Starfall occurrences, which last a maximum of 4000 years. Bjorsine scholars have estimated that they are currently in the 11th Age of the World, meaning that the world is at least around 44,000 years old.
