Student Response Cards - Students use cards with pairs of expressions to respond to teacher statements.
Como Yo - Teacher makes a statement. If it is true for any given student as well, the student quickly stands, says out loud "Como yo", and then sits (Note: the statement doesn't necessarily have to be true for the teacher) Examples include: "Yo tengo un hermano mayor/Tengo pelo/Vivo en los Estados Unidos, etc."
Completa mi frase-Teacher makes a statement with the last word blank, then calls on a student and that student completes the sentence with a word that makes sense. Many tenses can be used for this activity. (i.e. "Hoy no es lunes, es____________/Yo no estoy comiendo una hamburguesa, estoy comiendo___________________/Anoche yo no estuve en casa a las nueve, estuve________________")
White board practice - Students use individual white boards to respond to teacher prompts.
Action/Gesture Review - To review gestures for verbs/phrases. Students put their heads down, close their eyes and do the gestures as the teacher asks: "¿Cuál es la acción para una persona que nada, corre, duerme, tiene miedo, se esconde, trabaja, etc."Yo lo tengo - Each student gets a number, word, etc. Teacher says "¿Quién tiene el número diez/veinte/¿Quién tiene un animal que tiene pelo, etc.?" The student who has it responds "Yo lo tengo"
¿Cuál cosa? - Students select visible objects to answer teacher questions.¿Qué falta? - Teacher shows a plate of items. Students study what is on the plate, teacher then secretively removes one or kids close their eyes. Teacher then asks "¿Qué falta?"¿Qué hay en la bolsa? - Teacher has a box of items. One by one, the teacher takes an item from the box, talks about it in the target language, and sets it out. At the end, the teacher puts all items back in the bag/box and then asks a student "¿Qué hay en la bolsa?"
Make it True - Teacher makes a false statement, then calls on a student to repeat it but make it true. It could be based on a story, a comment about a city, a day of the week, etc.
Persona/Lugar/Cosa - Teacher says a word and students say if it is a Persona/Lugar/Cosa.Venn Diagrams - Compare two famous people, two students, two classes, two countries, two animals, etc. Provide students the Venn diagram or they can draw one out.
Dame una palabra - Teacher simply says a letter and a student provides a word that starts with that letter in the target language. Teacher can then periodically use the word in a sentence to provide more input.
Dime - Teacher says "Dime el color de tu casa/Dime el nombre de tu abuelo/Dime una clase que tú tienes, etc.
20 Preguntas - Have a student think of a person, place or thing. Teacher begins by asking "¿Eres tú una cosa normalmente en la escuela?"
Tres, Dos, Uno - Teacher says "Escribe tres frases que tú dices cada día, dos cosas que tú usas cada día y una película que tú has visto." This can be adapted to many types of vocabulary. The responses can also be given on white boards or on Padlet.
Memoria - Teacher shows a picture and students study the details of the picture for about 30 secs. Teacher then removes the picture and teacher asks something like "¿Viste un perro?" "¿Qué viste?" "¿Qué hay?" "¿Qué había?"
Verb Pause - Teacher reads a story and when the verb is read aloud, the teacher pauses and the kids have to act out that verb. Teacher could assign different verbs to different schools.
Visual Response - Teacher asks a question about a story or a random question in which all students will respond with the same one word answer. After asking the question the teacher waits for all to think of the answer. Teacher then says "Preparados, listos, ya". All kids then give one stomp on the floor at the same time and then say the answer in unison. This encourages the students to all think and answer.
Two truths one lie - Students write down two phrases that are a truth about what they did the past weekend/fact about their family, etc. and one lie. They then read them and the students guess which is the lie.
Hecho u Opinión-Fact or Opinion - Teacher provides a statement and students respond with cue card or white board that the statement is either an "hecho" or an "opinion".
Intruder - Teacher shows a picture, then shows three statements in which two pertain to the picture and one does not. Call on a student to say which is the intruder sentence. This can be based on a story they know, picture they see, the town they live in, a description of someone, etc.
A or B - Students have an A and a B card or could use right hand, left hand. Teacher asks something like "¿Qué te gusta más, Pepsi o Coke?" The first item mentioned is A and the second mentioned is B. Students respond with card/hand. (Si tuvieras veinte dólares y estuvieras en WalMart, ¿qué comprarías, una lámpara o zapatos?"
Tenia/Queria - Have students write down/submit two things they had as a child and two things they wanted. Collect them. Read to the class and the class guess who the person is.
See/Think/Wonder - Teacher shows a picture. Students complete statement with Yo veo/Yo pienso/Me pregunto.
Card Talk - (from Tina Hargaden) Students write their name on a notecard/sheet of paper. They draw a picture of something they like, something they would buy if they had a million dollars, etc. Teacher collects them and then uses responses to generate Spanish and CI (Comprehensilbe Input).
