Mrs. Sniderman

"Just go along with them and their culture, until you become acclimated"

Annemarie Sniderman describes her most memorable moments as a refugee who escaped from Vienna, Austria (just before the Holocaust) to the United Kingdom with the help of her aunt and grandfather. However, she could only leave through a kindertransport, a transportation service led by the UK to rescue children from certain Nazi-controlled areas. The kindertransports only transported children, meaning she left Vienna without her family.

Annemarie also goes into detail about her experience living with several foster families throughout Europe after relocating from Vienna. Later on, only she and a couple hundred other children (out of 10,000 that took the 1938 ~ 39 kindertransport) were able to reunite with their families. After being relocated many times, she learned to adapt to the language and culture of her new homes, while also learning to find the strength to let go of the people who took care of her, once she finally returned to her family.

Join her on this journey down the recollection of her experiences and feelings as a Viennese refugee.
