Buy our E-book, Let's Knit Caps. This helps us to raise funds for our project. There are almost two dozens patterns to learn in this book.
One of the toughest job perhaps is to shortlist the books to top ten when you know you are giving it to children across the country and they come from the lower bracket of life. Especially, when you have plenty of children books out to get their attention. How can you pick the books that will help a young child to shape his/her life. It's really tough in so many ways than just one. Because I am picking the books based on its re-read value and how it has lasted over the years surviving all the competition. My picks are more than its literary importance or rich in language or which helps you to kill time. These books offers answer to some of the most perplexing problems of life. Tells you be be bold, strong and resilient in life rather than rant, cry or complain or take pride in art of criticizing. I am listing the name of books as I like and as it has intention to help the human race regardless of your caste, creed and culture.
Dowaswopna [Daydream] : If you think educated people will understand what you say and will lend you their supporting hand to achieve your goal then you should read this book. This book is originally written by Gijubhai who is a revolutionary in Indian education system, mainly child education. It was he who had taught to Indian parents beore 1940 to respect their child, and try to understand their psychology. Indian society is very much like society, where parents like the one Jhamak Ghimire has, as described in her book who disrespect and devalued their own child. Especially if the child is disabled like Jhamak. In our society children’s voices and choices are grossly ignored. However, this book is much more than that. If you want to understand the difference between leader and a jobholder then you should read this book. Just because you know your dream does not mean it's easy to get it.
This is also a book that gives us clear idea about that you must have a dream, a daydream, and must work hard to achieve it. The book also gives a clear idea about how tough it is to achieve your dream and to identify the one who acts like barrier. You should read it to believe it. Sharad Chandra Wosti is brilliant in his work to translate this book from Nepali and due to his translation in Nepali it's easy to read and you can finish it in one sit down.
Chintansheel Gamboot : This is one of the good books for children. It has been only a couple of years since I have added this book to my list of books for winter project. Its beautiful pictures will captivate children as young as three or four years old and perhaps it is better because there will be someone to read them these books. However, this is equally good for those who can read it by himself or herself. This is beautifully written by a Korean woman about a story of a child's rain boot. This book teaches children to be happy and think positive. It gives a series of examples with pictures that will help the idea to sink in young minds. Kim wrote a unique story book which is easier for children to understand. So, once children will get it, it is sure they will give it to their own child when they themselves will become parents.
Setobag: Another book on my list is Setobag by Diamond SJB Rana. Now this is one book from Nepali that is now translated in many languages for the novel lovers around the world. This is one of my personal novel choices. My love of reading it never vanished with time. I started reading it at the age of 13 and now after decades of passing that age I still love reading it. I keep reading it and each time it is a new book for me.
Akbar and Birbal Story.: Many of our books are famous story books from around the world which are translated to Nepali. One is a famous Indian story about Akbar and Birbal. This is the story about a king of the Mughal Era and his clever Prime Minister. Birbal always takes pride in proving that he is too smart to be the king's right hand. However, the king never put in words that his money allows him to hire smart people to work for him. It is the story about how one must know to deal with cunning people to face the wild world out there.
This book will teach you to be street smart. Like at one time Birbal is asked the question how many stars are there in the night sky ? His answer is, as much as hair in that sheep, pointing at the sheep that was nearby. If you don't believe it, he went on, then go ahead count the hairs yourself. Or, in another story there is this question, where is the center of earth ? Bilbal picks a big nail and hammers it in front of him. He tells the man who asked the question, this is the center of the earth. If you don't believe it, then go ahead take the measurement on your own. Birbal's methods to answer some question comes pretty close to some of the lines from the greatest of our time scientist Stephen Hawking. In his book, A Brief History of Time, he tries to explain to us how old the universe is. Many times he uses one of his favorite line : million, million and million years ago, now add 20 zero after that million. As I was reading that line one more time, in that moment out of no where I got Birbal's angle.
This book will be first choice on the list of children's books as long as there will be cunning people trying to con naive ones. Birbal is the Robin Hood of naive people, and so he will be loved century after century. There are many translations of Birbal and Akbar stories available in Nepal.
Jivan Kanda Ki Phool : In his famous book Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill writes that thought is the most powerful thing on earth. I have been reading books that focus entirely how our thoughts change and shape our lives in the long run. Then I came to read this book which is the perfect example of how it is the most important part of our life. Jhamak Ghimire lives that life in real. This is an autobiography by a woman who is born with cerebral palsy. Living a life of a deaf, who could not walk, move her hands to do daily basic chores. She never went to school even for a day in her life. It's the story of a disabled young girl’s struggle, how she learned to read and write, how she got dignity first in her own house and then in her society and how she earned the nation wide respect for her being and also her strong voice through her pen. Never before in my life I have read a book which is filled with loads of quotable quotes.
Reading this book will also help children living in children homes who feel ignored, disrespected or belittled time and again. Reading books like this will give us hope, courage, resilience and determination to face our troubles and pain. If she can live life on her terms, then what should stops us to live ours on our terms?
