Buy our E-book, Let's Knit Caps. This helps us to raise funds for our project. There are almost two dozens patterns to learn in this book.
Volunteer busy finishing caps and neck warmers before the visit to children homes.
Volunteer knitters gathered to knit for Winter Project - 2016. They came to learn. We trained them for free to get the caps and neck warmers. This event was organised in two cities, Chitwan and in Kathmandu.
TWinter Project has been donating hand-knitted warmers like caps, neck warmers, and blankets to children homes in Nepal since 2015. We have been making it locally so all the money that we receive as donations will be used to Winter Project's needs. We have been covering 200 children each year for that we have to visit seven to ten children homes across the country. This means our visit is not limited in Kathmandu valley only. As of now we have visited more than 40 children homes and over 900 children have received warmers and books. Now after many years so many people would like to join our effort to reach more and more children and want to help us by sending what they make from around the world. In recent years, our biggest challenge has been to add Blankets to all the children we give warmers that means 200 children. Due to storage facilities, collection of warmers starts from September only, and distribution takes place from mid-November till December.
According to a book published by Central Child Welfare Board [CCWB ], in 2015 Nepal had 585 registered children homes protecting close to 16,000 children. Of that number, about 30% of the children homes have not more than 11 children, and a substantial number of children homes have only 12 - 13 children.
Children homes means orphanages, but what we need to understand is not all children homes here are orphanages. Many children homes accept children based on the poor financial condition of their parents. Families which have many children from remote parts of the country do not hesitate to send their children, especially girls, to children homes in big cities just to get free education. There are also children of war conflict victims, abandoned children and runaways, and children whose parents are in jail, as well as orphaned children. The 2015 CCWB survey reported in its booklet, 'State of the child care homes in Nepal,' that there are more than 200 children homes in Kathmandu alone.
That same survey also revealed that Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Pokhara and Chitwan are four big cities which have highest number of children homes, Kathmandu being the number one with more than 200 children homes and Chitwan being the number four with more than 40 children homes. These four cities have over 60% of the children homes in Nepal.
We added nighties in our donations package from this year 2022. This means we have to make 220 sets of nighties. 100 piece for girs and 120 for boys. We plan to add one casual house dress for all 200 children from next year onwards. We are hopeful to raise sufficient fund for this plan.
Making 200 sets of warmers is time consuming work. No doubt this keeps some of us busy for almost a six months. This is also the reason we need funds almost in the beginning of the year.
Before making deliveries it's a must to pack bags and label them for each children home. That way we make sure we have a package for each children home on our list and enough warmers for each child.
All packed before time to move out. It's better if we are ready to go two days before than hold our visit for a week. We pack big bags to store many warmers and books to make it easy to visit children homes outside Kathmandu valley.
Some assorted Sweets. Once I asked what you like most : books, warmers or sweets. Sweets was the prompt answer and yes they added books and warmers too is good to receive. they were being diplomatic at this age. So, no one should visit children homes without some sweets.
100 sets of warmers and caps are ready now. This only 50% of our annual needs. We need to make another 100 sets of caps and neck warmers. As for the blankets, we need many more.
Before the goods are packed and sent to children homes we make sure there are plenty of colors and designs for the children to choose from.
Only one in 20 children homes has a kitchen garden for fresh vegetables, which means that only 5% of children homes have a kitchen garden at its service.
Youngsters were confused when they saw so many options and were asked to pick just one. So one girl changed her cap and neck warmer more than five times in front of me. This is the result of years of being of handed one for them one instead of being allowed to choose one from the pile.
Every where we go we always let children pick what they like instead of handing them one to wear. Sure this small option confuses them a lot. They better learn this game of abundance of opportunity and picking what they like now rather than later in life.
Winter Project is now in 9th year of running.
This year we reached out Eight children homes in total to cover 200 children.
Every year Winter project donates Books for Children, along with a set of hand knitted cap and neck warmers. Sweet treats for children is a must. We also donate hand knitted woollen blankets however we could donate it to very few children homes. Of that few dozens blankets decide to give it to the children homes which has highest number of children we visit each year. That is why this year it went to Prabina Home which has two children homes in Kathmandu.
Of the Eight children homes we have covered three children homes are in Kathmandu valley, Two children homes are in Chitwan, One eash is in Gulmi, Sindhupalchowk, Palpa and Myagdi respectively. When we cover a children homes within the valley we make sure that the distance between two children homes are at least10 km. this means we reached out to out of valley with more than 70% of our donation and only 30% goes to children homes in Kathmandu valley.
This year too we could donate woollen blankets to three children homes. thanks to Carol Chan from Hongkong who make this easier.
