Teaching Method
Based on my observations, the teaching method used in the English language learning process is student-centered or problem-based learning. In this approach, the teacher places the students at the heart of the learning experience, encouraging them to actively develop their own opinions, ask questions, and engage in meaningful discussions. This method not only promotes critical thinking but also fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility in the learning process.
Additionally, the teacher implements problem-based learning (PBL), where students are presented with real-world phenomena or challenges to analyze and solve. This approach allows students to apply their language skills in context, collaborate with peers, and think creatively to find solutions. By using PBL, students are not only learning English but also developing valuable problem-solving and teamwork skills that are essential in today’s globalized world.
Based on my observations, my resource teacher made effective use of various learning materials, including digital media, books, videos, films, and engaging PowerPoint presentations. These resources were carefully selected to capture students' interest and support different aspects of the lesson. The teacher also incorporated worksheets and quizzes to reinforce learning and assess student understanding. To make the learning experience more engaging, the teacher encouraged students to share their opinions and express their thoughts, ensuring that the lessons were interactive and student-centered. By drawing from students' perspectives, the teacher was able to create a dynamic and participatory classroom environment.
The classroom is equipped with a range of effective learning resources to support student engagement and understanding. There is a LCD Projector, TV with an HDMI cable and wireless presenter, and remote. The room features long whiteboards, which enhance interaction and explanation of the lesson material. Every student has a personal handbook, making it easier for the teacher to clarify key concepts.
Students also have access to the internet, allowing them to explore additional references and resources for deeper learning. Furthermore, each student is provided with their own writing materials, ensuring they have what they need to actively participate. The classroom benefits from good air circulation, creating a comfortable environment for focused learning. These resources, combined with the integration of technology, create a dynamic and conducive learning space that blends traditional and modern methods effectively, enhancing both teaching and student outcomes.
The assessment process is vital in tracking student progress and determining their future academic opportunities. It has a significant impact on their development, which is why it must be carried out with precision and thoughtfulness. Teachers are accountable for the grades their students achieve. At Laboratory High School, the assessment system consists of mid-term exams, quizzes (both writing and oral quiz), assignments, and other projects.
