St. Vincent de Paul, January 20

"Volunteering at St. Vincent de Paul was especially significant to me because it made me feel as if I earned my day off of school and made something meaningful out of the day, rather than just wasting it by sleeping in and laying around. Also, with MLK day being the national day of service, I feel as if I did my part in honoring the great Martin Luther King Jr. The service itself consisted of sorting donated food items and cleaning out the basement of their old warehouse. My friends and I were efficient in completing our tasks and the people working there seemed impressed with our work. It is always rewarding to hear them compliment us and talk about how we are showing off the Elder purple in a good way."

"Going to St. Vincent de Paul opened my eyes to how generous people can be in our community. We unloaded barrels and barrels of food, ranging from canned goods to desserts. All of these items go into a small grocery store where impoverished people can come and replenish themselves. I was extremely satisfied with our volunteering on our day off. My favorite part of my time here occurred when one of the ladies at St. Vincent de Paul noticed our Elder sweatshirts and excitedly said she loved the Elder boys’ service in the community. I hope that we can further represent Elder through more activities such as this one. Organizations like St. Vincent de Paul do so much good in the world, and it gives light to what seems to be darkness in parts of our community."
