Keeping a democracy healthy requires constant work. Perhaps we were complacent or took the health of our democracy for granted. I know I felt, well we marched for Civil Rights, we marched against the war, we fought for women’s rights and then I figured it was accomplished. Now I understand nothing is ever completely accomplished. Democracy is like a garden. It needs constant tending and nurturing and educating ourselves on best practices if we are to see regular fruit of our labors and a healthy garden.
