Library Mission

The Westinghouse Campus Library serves three New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) public schools within the Westinghouse Campus at 105 Tech Place in Brooklyn, New York:

The library is committed to providing equitable access to all students and staff and to ensure that they are effective users of ideas and information. Our polices and procedures are put into place to benefit all patrons. Our mission aligns with the American Association of School Libraries (AASL). Our primary goals are to:

    • Connect with students by maintaining a welcoming environment

    • Create a collection that reflects our students, their interests, and their learning needs

    • Collaborate with staff across disciplines to empower students to become enthusiastic readers, ethical users of information, skillful researchers, and critical thinkers

Student Library Procedures & Guidelines

  • All students must have a pass to enter the library at all times. If there is a "Library Closed" sign on the door, the student must return to their classroom or lunchroom.

  • All students must sign in to the library using their OSIS number or Student ID.

  • No food or drinks are permitted in the library with the exception of water bottles. Water bottles should not be near the computers at any time. If you are coming to the library during the lunch hour, please eat before you enter the library.

  • Students are to be respectful while in the library.

    • Students will treat the space, furniture, and materials with respect (appropriate library volume, no feet on the furniture, no racing using rolling chairs, no throwing or damaging books, etc.).

    • Students will treat their peers with respect (school-appropriate language, no touching, etc.).

    • Students will treat staff with respect (following directions, responding when spoken to, etc.).

    • Students will receive a warning for disrespectful behavior. If, after a warning, student behavior does not improve, an administrator will be notified, and that student may be removed from the library. Students may temporarily lose access to the library for disrespectful behavior.

  • Students need a student ID to check out materials. Students are permitted to check out 5 items at a time for a period of 2 weeks (14 calendar days); items can be renewed as long as they are not on hold for someone else. Students may have up to 2 items on hold.

  • Students are responsible for the library materials that they check out. Students will receive an email reminder after an item is 4 weeks overdue. Students will not receive fines for overdue books; however, after a book is overdue for 8 weeks, it is marked as lost and students are required to pay a lost book fee of $5.00 OR students may perform one period of community service in the library to pay off their lost book fee.

  • Computers can be signed out for use and used for educational purposes, such as research, word processing, creating presentation, etc. Students may use headphones, if necessary, and at the discretion of their teacher. Inappropriate use of the computers may result in administrative action. Printers will only be used for educational purposes.
