Witness Stones Community Project 2020 @ the Noah Webster House

Join this unique public history project ONLINE during this unusual time in our country

Witness the history of slavery in West Hartford with the Witness Stones Project Directors online. Read, analyze, and discuss documents discovered about an enslaved family who lived here, during Noah Webster’s time, and learn to tell their story. Help others in town remember their lives through the stone to be placed in the Old Center Cemetery at the end of this public history project.

Remember the lives of enslaved people who lived in the West Division of Hartford and whose names have been lost to history. The Witness Stones West Hartford Project honors and commemorates their lives. The project has placed 12 stones in the Old Center Cemetery - and there are at least 40 more people we are researching to commemorate.

Participate as an individual or group (Students grades 5 and up, youth groups, college students, members of organizations, religious groups, neighbors )

Join online meetings to analyze historical documents, talk with Project Directors to discover details of the lives of enslaved by West Division family . You will discuss ways to help tell the story of these lost voices in our community.

Collaborate in four one hour on-line sessions with Project Directors, Dr. Tracey Wilson, Town Historian and Liz Devine on May 6, 13, 20, and 27.
