Part-time Work & Permission

"Study first, of course!"

For Part-time, you need two permissions from "Academic Adviser" & "the Immigration Bureau"

※ Precaution: For new students, we recommend that you do not start doing any part-time work until you have a full understanding of your study and research schedule. When you want to start a part-time work, please make sure that you have obtained approval from your university supervisor.

1. How to get the permit

Several items need to bring to the Immigration Bureau for getting part-time work permit :


Noted :1. International students who work without a work permit and those who fail to follow the regulations pertaining to the permit will be fined, and in some cases, subjected to forced deportation. 2. see Handbook for International Students 2019 p.8-9

2. Working hours

  • The maximum hours of work are limited to 28 hours/week, including Golden Week in May

  • During long holidays may work a maximum of 8 hours/day


Noted : *Golden Week in May is not considered as spring break

3. Part-time job

  • We recommend new students not to take any jobs until they understand their study and research schedules at Nagoya University (seminar and lab times, etc). If you want to start working, please talk to an academic advisor in advance.

  • "Long school vacations" refers to summer vacation, winter vacation and spring vacation.

  • International students are not permitted to work in "the adult entertainment business" or related businesses such as bars, cabarets, pachinko parlors, mah-jongg parlors, dispatch fashion or mail-order adult video, online adult video services, etc

  • If you are on a leave of absence, you cannot work

  • No need to apply for permission for activities that are not included in your visa status for jobs like a TA or RA that are performed under contract with Nagoya University

  • If you are working late at night, please note that this may change your daily rhythm and adversely affect your health and/or school studies

  • Protect yourself from illegal work;

      1. Confirm contract content (breaks, payment, etc.)

      2. Be careful about copyright law when doing translation work


※Insurance, Tax, Final Return

  • As it is based on your annual income for current year, the premium of the National Health Insurance for the next year may increase, and the rate of payment waiver of the National Pension premium may be reappraised and adjusted. For further information, inquire at your ward office.


  • You are required to pay taxes based on the amount you earn at your part-time job. Depending on the amount of your annual income or the tax treaty between your home country and Japan, you might get an exemption or tax deduction. Also, in the case income tax is automatically withheld from your monthly pay, you might get a tax refund by filing a final tax return. If there is any question about your part-time work pay, check with your employer. Also, we recommend that you keep all documents such as your contract and wage slips. #In addition, we recommend that you keep all documents, such as contracts and pay slips.


  • File for final return.* You might get "a final return" if you file for it between February 16th and March 15th. The requirement of “final return” and the way to file the report varies depending on the situation of each. If you have any questions, you can refer to the associations below:

Precautions when doing part time work

  1. You need to make a time for study first. When you want to start doing part-time work, please make sure that you have obtained approval from your university supervisor.

  2. Long holidays refer to the summer and winter breaks. (Golden week is not considered a long holiday.)

  3. The permit is given for a length within your granted period of stay. Therefore, you need to reapply for the permit whenever you apply for an extension of your period of stay.

  4. After you apply or reapply for the permit, please photocopy both sides of your Residence Card and take it to the international student office in your school.

  5. Working for and doing business in the adult entertainment venues or related industries is strictly prohibited. (The "entertainment industry" includes working in cabaret clubs, bars and night clubs, mahjong rooms, pachinko parlors, and any venue related to the adult entertainment and sex industry).

  6. International students cannot work during their leave of absence from school.

  7. There are some part-time jobs such as TA (Teaching Assistant) or RA (Research Assistant) done under contract with Nagoya University that do not require a part-time work permit.

  8. Students should show their Residence Card to their employers indicating the regulations pertaining to the permit (time limitation, work type limitation, etc.).

  9. When selecting a part-time job, you should confirm the following content in advance.

    • Whether the work affects your studies (for example, working late at night might affect your studies the following day)

    • Whether there are any problems pertaining to the work content (including safety, insurance in case of accidents, whether it is a permitted work type, etc.)

    • Whether or not translation work involves illegal publications or websites. (piracy, etc.)

    • The employment conditions (payment, transportation expense payment, working hours, etc.)

    • The payment method (whether daily, week or monthly payment, cash or bank transfer, tax payment, etc.)

  10. It is recommended that you ask your employer to draw up a work contract stipulating employment conditions, including the payment conditions.
