Plagiarism in academic paper & examinations

Please be entirely aware that borrowing or quoting someone else’s writing or ideas without appropriate attribution is considered fraudulent use and/or plagiarism and will be subject to penalties.*

It is strongly recommended that students actively attend courses and seminars on writing skills and research ethics offered by the university and learn the appropriate ways to conduct their studies and research.

Several procedures to take the course as follow:

1. Go to the NUCT website.

2. Log in with your Nagoya University ID and password.

3. For the Japanese, click on "盗用を回避するには" displayed on the tab above, and for the English, click on "Avoiding Plagiarism".

4. Follow the guideline and start the course.

Sexual & academic harassment

1. Any forced sexual behavior against the will of the other party.

      • Persistent & forceful demands for a relationship or sexual behavior, attempts at bodily contact or sexual behavior.

Ex) A faculty member persistently attempts to give a student a ride home, a superior repeatedly touches the shoulder of a person of lower position at the work place.
      • Stalking behavior

Ex) Persistently calling & messaging someone, under a one-sided assumption that they are in a relationship.

2. Giving advantages or disadvantages to the other party depending on their responses to the sexual speech or behavior of the offending party in relation to their Education, Research, Employment or Academics, or forcing the other party to engage in speech or behavior of a sexual nature against their will using their superiority over the offendee.

3. Reflecting whether someone accepted or denied a sexual request on their academic grades, teaching curriculum, employment evaluations/assignments.

Ex) Expressing affection to a student you are fond of, and giving them favorable treatment.

4. A person of advantageous position engages in speech of sexual nature, or demands certain behaviors and attire based on sexual interest.

Ex) An academic supervisor implies that "if you refuse to have a relationship with me, I will no longer supervise you.

5. When speech or behavior of sexual nature taking place within a place of education, research, or work, and as a result the educational/research/work environment of a specific or non-specific person or group of people is harmed (Hostile Environment Sexual Harassment).

      • Spreading sexual rumors

Ex) A faculty member persistently spreads gossip about the sexual relationships of another faculty member.
      • Displaying obscene images on research lab or office computers.

      • Engaging in obscene speech or behavior in the workplace, research lab or classroom.

      • Engaging in indecent acts at social gatherings etc.

6. Engaging in sexually discriminatory speech or behavior based on a preconceived notion of predetermined gender roles.

      • Discriminating in the distribution of educational, research, or work assignments based on gender.

Ex) Only women are tasked with cleaning up after meals.
      • Engaging in speech emphasizing gender.

Ex) Making comments such as "You don't have guts even though you are a man", "Women are useless", "Homosexuals have a problem" etc.

Nagoya University has set up a Harassment Consultation Center to prevent and eliminate the occurrence of any kinds of harassment. Professional counselors deal with inquiries with the utmost respect for their clients’ feelings and wishes. If you observe someone suffering from any kind of harassment, you may also come and report the case.

In addition to the Harassment Consultation Center, each School at Nagoya University has appointed a faculty member as contact person (cf. see below). For English language consultation, you may visit the representative at the IEEC. Earlier consultation will prevent the situation from getting serious. All consultation will be kept confidential strictly.

Information Security Policy

1. Using peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing programs is not permitted

Copying or distributing music CDs or software without the permission of the copyright holder is a violation of copyright law. Illicit acquisition of software (purchase of a pirated copy or through Winny or the like) and use of such software are not permitted.


2. Illegal software is punishable

University Information Technology Center can detect the misuse of software and result in severe punishment.

a) Xunlei file sharing program is prohibited at Nagoya University

If the program is installed, uninstall the program before using the computer at the university

b) Purchase Microsoft Office on official website

    • Microsoft office purchased online shop may not the official, even if it is stated in "100% Official Product" and it is illegal to install in your device.

    • Avoid purchasing online shop, especially sold in unfairly cheap price.


3. Computer viruses

Computer viruses are spread mainly via e-mail. For example, a large number of e-mails that disguises credit card company have been observed. If you access the link described in such e-mails, the virus will be downloaded to your computer. Thus be careful by opening suspicious file attachments even when the e-mail appears to be from someone you know.

Prepare for Disaster

1. Disaster Preparation

  • Need to know the nearest evacuation area !!

  • Live in an earthquake resistant apartment, the buildings build after 1981 are recommended

  • Secure bookshelves/heavy furnishings to the wall

  • Store three days supply of water (9L/person) & food

  • Prepare an emergency bag including items such as a first aid kit, everyday items, valuables

  • A flashlight/slippers should be kept at your bedside

2. When an Earthquake Occurs

      • Hide under a desk/table & cover your head; move to a spot where you will avoid falling objects

      • Open a door to secure an exit (do not rush outside until the tremors stop)

      • Switch off any heaters & gas (if possible)

      • Get the right information from TV, radio, or mobile phone (Japan Metrological Agency)

      • Do not use elevators when evacuating


3. When typhoon is approaching

  • Stay at home, put your trash inside the room, and avoid unnecessary outing.

  • When storm warning issued, classes in Nagoya University is cancelled.

  • If you already come to university, you should go home before becoming dangerous situation.

4. What should you do after earthquake occured?
Contact your family, friends & the staff or faculty of your department as soon as possible to tell them your condition.

  • If you cannot reach them, please send an email via mobile phone or Dial 171 (Disaster Emergency Dengon).


  • NU Survivor Confirmation System :防災 (Disaster Prevention) on the NU Portal site (MyNU): Register your e-mail & become acquainted with the system. To access the information provided on the NU Portal site, your Nagoya Daigaku ID & Password are necessary.
