Physical water is the term used to describe the direct uses of water. This is any form of water use where water comes straight from the tap to achieve its purpose.
Facts about household physical water use in Australia
The average Australian household uses 260,000L of water each year.
A 5-minute shower uses 75L of water.
Toilets use a lot of water! A half flush uses 3L of water, a full flush uses 6L.
A regular washing machine uses 50L of water per cycle.
Dishwashers are great at saving water. A dishwasher uses 9.5L of water in Australia. Handwashing dishes can use up to 60L of water.
Leaking taps can waste up to 3L of water per day.
