The importance and uses of water
Water is important for life on Earth. It has many different uses depending on the source. We can divide water sources into freshwater such has river, lakes or ponds and sea water resources.
Freshwater
Freshwater is a renewable resource. Fresh water is an important resource, because it is needed for drinking, cooking, washing, growing crops, and keeping living things alive. It is also used by industries in manufacturing.
However, freshwater is a scarce commodity in some parts of the Caribbean. For example, on islands such as Aruba, the Bahamas and the Cayman Islands. There are no large rivers on these islands so in order to provide fresh water, the governments of these islands have to implement desalination plants that help remove salt from the sea water to produce fresh water for household use.
Sea water
Sea water contains incredible amount of salt. However, water evaporates from the sea and is returned to Earth as rain and snow.
Our water comes from many different sources, and we use it in many different ways.
Did you know?
Earth is called the Blue Planet because about 71% of its surface is covered in water? And about 96.5% of the Earth's water is in the oceans so only 3.5% is fresh water? Also, most deep underground water is also found in rivers and lakes?
Yes! This is all facts.
