Byers's middle name is spelled incorrectly. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a clue, since the whole cemetery clue scene seems a little far-fetched to me. I can't quite wrap my head around how Langly (was it Langly?) managed to leave these clues.
I like the tiny object given by Skinner to Mulder and Scully. This crucial tool is used in many scenes. We wonder how M&S would have succeeded without it. Thanks and Bravo to Skinner!
I like how Scully surreptitiously keep it in her pocket as she already knew that it will be needed. Maybe she wanted to keep it to use it in the unremarkable house? Remember that in the end, the tool is still in her pocket...
This is one of the most powerful cold opens in the entire series. I could have come up with an answer for every one of our moments from this scene alone. I chose it for the most powerful because of how quickly Mulder and Scully go from sleeping to fighting for their lives, and how effectively they do so. They've clearly prepared for this scenario and they know just what to do.
The discovery of Deep Throat's grave by Mulder is moving. He was a beloved character killed too soon, and a paternal figure for Mulder.
It's a really nice touch, very nostalgic and full of emotions. It's very well acted by David Duchovny.
In this scene, Mulder and Scully come back together after being separated for a short time, and they can't keep their hands off each other. It's like they each need the reassurance that the other is safe and whole before they can feel the danger has passed.
The whole episode is an entire MSR spectacle! I am so fulfilled just watching M&S acting together in perfect unison.
And we have so more for our imagination! Indeed, what happened before the episode, and what will happen after? They are both tired, resting on the couch side by side, and then... just let's fantasize.
For the 'before' moment, we have some clues if you watch details in the scenes within the unremarkable house. I wonder what they have eaten, why Scully's gun and badge were on the table, why all these X Files are on the coffee table, who decided to watch The Ramones on TV, whose are the books on the stairs, what is on the darts game. Moreover, are they going often to Ikea together, or is it just a joke? We can also see that Scully knows perfectly where the plastic bags are in the kitchen.
I love the two of them raving over this muffin. It's so good Mulder is going to open an X-File on it and Scully is going to eat the whole thing even if it came out of an alien's butt. It's just such a normal moment in the midst of chaos, and I find it adorable.
I love the scene in the dinner and how Scully overreacts!
And then, Mulder's line both sweet and funny: "Scully, you looked so adorbs just there. All curled up in a ball in the booth of a shanky bar with your fingers wrapped around the grip of an assassin's Glock."
Seeing Langly on Mulder's cell phone, the same Langly who died and was buried 16 years earlier, was a huge surprise. I love how he was worked into the story, giving us just a little bit of Lone Gunmen without a hallucination or a retcon (even though the death of the Lone Gunmen is the one storyline I would most like retconned).
I want to focuse on the two scenes involving Skinner, that I hesitated to put on the "Dislike" item.
First, M&S are surprised to encounter Skinner in the woods. We also are but for me it's a very good surprise. Alas, M&S are very suspicious. Skinner is annoyed by their reaction, but he gives them money and the magic tiny tool. 'Grand Seigneur', Skinner!
Second, Skinner is surprised to encounter M&S in the FBI parking. Once again, M&S are very suspicious, and Skinner is even more sad and hurt by their attitude and words. Always being 'un Grand Seigneur' and a very good friend, Skinner lets M&S go in his apartment and use his computer.
Mitch Pileggi is amazing with his subtile expressions and movements to make us sense his feelings. I'm very sorry for him.
Though, these two scenes have a beautiful photography and are very well directed. I love the aesthetic, the way M&S and Skinner are situated in the frame, etc...
Isabelle is always commenting on the American fondness for abbreviations, so I have to think this is an American moment, Mulder telling Scully she's "adorbs" while California Sun plays in the background.
The Arlington cemetery is surely the most american location! Moreover, the breadcrumbs about the US Presidents dates of death is really very american for me. Wouldn't have find the clues without Google or Scully!
I really love this whole scene, and I love the shot when they run to leave the cemetery. I'd want to watch more M&S resolving puzzles and riddles.
"Who needs Google when you got Scully?" This is a very cute moment between them. Mulder is so impressed with Scully, and she's loving it.
It seems to me, though, that Mulder has been shown to have a fairly encyclopedic knowledge of most subjects. Between the two of them Google is completely unnecessary.
"Maybe he saw Mulder in his dreams.", said Scully.
"Who hasn't?" ,replied Mulder. Then, he coughed.
All that in front of a stranger, who speaks about eternal life and love. It's very cute.
Okay... Well... For the part "who hasn't?", I feel concerned. You have to know that I'm a huge dreamer.
This 57 year old man just climbed 29 flights of stairs after being up all night, chased from his home, crawling around a cemetery, subsisting on nothing but muffins and beer, and he can still overpower his captor with his hands cuffed behind his back. It's as though he's had some practice...
I love action-badass-mature Mulder fighting against a young-evil-russian-mysterious guy. With hands cuffed!
Wow! That's a blast.
And I love the fact that he is tired in the end, and about to throw up. He's not superman!
Well, Scully is also quite amazed, but there's some secret stuff involving handcuffs that she knows better than us.
Scully out-runs, out-maneuvers, and out-smarts the Purlieu assassins in order to shut down the simulator. You know, just being her normal badass self.
There are several best Scully moments, but I chose the one where she manages to enter the secret tunnel, charming the youngest FBI Agent. Cougar Scully is on top!
Of course we can also appreciate Mulder's reactions, and how Scully turns away her admirer: "Sorry Bro. Married to the Bureau." (with a look on Mulder).
This connection to Little Green Men is very touching. Mulder finally learns the name of his first informant, someone who was practically a father-figure to him. The emotion on his face as he realizes whose grave they're standing at is quite moving.
The bus scene reminded me the one in E.B.E. And in fact, there are similarities in the plot between the two episodes: M&S being spied on or tracked, all the paranoia induced on them. Moreover, it's the episode where we see for the first time The Lone Gunmen, introduced by Mulder to Scully in the bus scene! When they meet, Langly wears his Ramones T-shirt and speaks about the assassination of J. F. Kennedy. There are also all the great scenes with Deep Throat: on the bench, in Mulder's apartment where Mulder thanks him, in front of the shark tank... There is also the devastated Mulder's apartment which reminds me the devastated unremarkable house!
I'd wanted more bus or train scenes in the whole series.
I love that Mulder and Scully are together through almost the entire episode. They are completely in sync with each other, trusting each other, relying on each other's strengths, working as a team. I think it's the first time we've seen this since Requiem.
The teaser is wonderfully amazing and gives the tone for the whole episode.
I love all the M&S unspoken -just eyes and senses- communication, the run in the woods, the resolution of the riddle, M&S on the run, Scully's slide under the table, their jumps in the stairs, their fight against bad guys, Mulder's verbal confrontation with Price, his smart trick to being lead to the server. I love the end when they throw the Files on the floor.
And it's very nice to see Langly, and The Lone Gunmen on a framed picture in the unremarkable house.
I don't think that the distrust of Skinner was earned. We haven't seen enough to understand why Mulder and Scully would believe the worst of him. That was a theme throughout the season that bothered me, because it seemed like a convenient plot point rather than a realistic one.
As I've said in the "Surprising Moment" I don't like much how M&S are behaving towards Skinner. He really doesn't deserve that.
Apart that the episode is great... But I've found one little thing that bother me because of my job. Dr. Karah Hamby is a professor of mathematics in a Technical Academy (don't know what this last means exactly). So, she's quite doing the same job than me. I don't believe that in 2017(8) she's still using an old-school overhead projector with a transparency to do math. Even in our french public universities we don't use them no more. The good point for the episode is that the transparency become blooded, and Mulder can take it (it would have been harder with a powerpoint).
Blood on a math transparency: actually, I love that.
I hadn't seen the mistake on Byer's middle name. Intriguing...
It's true that there is surely some holes in the plot... The whole breadcrumbs in the cemetery? Was it possible to have anticipated that? By the way, is it realistic that The Lone Gunmen are buried there?
So much to love in this episode... I like that we don't have exactly the same choices for our items whereas we share the same thoughts. Glad you have put the muffin scene, I hadn't a place to put it in!
Thanks to think at me in the american moment. "Adorbs" is really cute, and it sounds very well even in french (maybe I could use it here). This scene is also very typical because it occurs in a diner. I dream to eat in a place like that!
I agree that Mulder has also an encyclopedic knowledge for many things. See, he knows how to phreak a phone and to do some interesting maths -as I can judge by what is written on the diner napkin-. I didn't even know the word 'phreaking' before watching This.
Great detail! See, Skinner was looking out for M&S. It was really unfair of them not to trust him.
There is so much MSR in this episode it's like a feast for the starving! I love how comfortable they are together in the unremarkable house.
Even though I don't like the distrust of Skinner, I agree with you that Mitch Pileggi played the part beautifully. He looks so hurt that they're suspicious of him, after all they've been through.
I've seen Mulder in my dreams. Just sayin...
As for the Lone Gunmen being buried in Arlington, it's not very realistic. It's for members of the armed forces and their dependents. One of the many reasons not to like Jump the Shark.
Glen Morgan did a wonderful job showing us a continuation of the Lone Gunmen story here. You're so right, with all the connections to their first appearance in EBE, This truly felt like we were in the X-Files universe.
