His knack for communication and mentorship helps students find their voice and boosts their confidence, both in and out of the classroom.

Retired Lieutenant Colonel James C. Rose

James C. Rose, or "J.C." as he is often called, is a towering, well-built Black man with a commanding presence. A former US Marine drill instructor, J.C. brings a robust and rigorous approach to the ROTC program at Marion-Washington High School. His leadership style is founded on the core values of loyalty, integrity, and relentless physical training.

J.C.'s no-nonsense attitude and high standards push his students to exceed their limits, fostering resilience and a strong sense of duty. Despite his tough exterior, he is deeply committed to each student's personal growth, understanding that the discipline of ROTC can serve as a foundation for success in various aspects of life.

In addition to his ROTC responsibilities, J.C. is the assistant band director for the school's award-winning marching band. His military precision and experience have been invaluable in elevating the band's performance, earning them accolades and a reputation for excellence. J.C.'s dual role in the ROTC and the band allows him to connect with a diverse group of students, providing them with structure and motivation.

Bringing Order to Chaos

The merger of Marion and Washington High Schools has brought about significant turmoil, with frequent altercations and a palpable tension between former rivals. Kevin and J.C. stand as pillars of stability and direction in this challenging environment. Their complementary leadership styles—Kevin's reasoned and communicative approach alongside J.C.'s disciplined and physical regimen—work in tandem to bring order and purpose to the student body.

Through the ROTC program, Kevin and J.C. offer students not just military discipline but also pathways to personal development and future success. Whether guiding students toward the speech team's eloquence or the marching band's precision, they provide much-needed structure and opportunities for achievement, helping to unify the newly formed school and steer students toward a brighter future.
