"War Is No Place for A Woman"

The Female Realities of the Russo-Ukrainian War

About the Project

Martha Nek, Yuliia Slipchenko, and Skylar Painter met in April of 2023, shortly after the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine that began on February 24th, 2022. They met in Saarbrucken, Germany during a week-long intensive study abroad program that brought together students from West Chester University of Pennsylvania, Ukrainian Catholic University, Saarland University, and Petro Mohyla Black Sea National University. This week long intensive program focused on documenting wartime experiences through the practice of Oral History, or the collection of voices and interviews to be used in the study of history. This project in particular focuses on collecting the voices and stories of women impacted by the Russo-Ukrainian War. Since war is stereotypically a "man's struggle," we wished to shine light as well as collect primary sources surrounding the experiences and struggles women face during wartime. Explore the interviews of various Ukrainian women from different circumstances to learn more about how Russian aggression, and war in general, impacts women.Â
