For this project I explored how social media impacts me.
I took the “AM I ADDICTED TO SOCIAL MEDIA?” QUIZ My quiz results said that me and social media are “pretty inseparable” which I didn't realize at first but is honestly true. I’m not fully addicted I would say but I definitely spend a lot of time scrolling without even noticing it. It also mentioned doing a digital detox, and I feel like that wouldn’t be a bad idea for me since being online all the time can get overwhelming and slowly rot your brain. Overall, the results made me realize I should probably start cutting back a little and be more aware of how much time I’m on my phone.
One thing that really stood out to me from the Pew Research article is that about 95% of teens use YouTube, and around 67% use it every day. I picked this one because it honestly relates to me perfectly YouTube is probably the app I’m on the most besides Instagram. It’s wild how much people depend on it now, whether it’s for entertainment, school stuff, learning something new, or just kill time. I find it interesting because it shows YouTube isn’t just an app anymore it’s basically part of everyday life for almost everyone my age.
This graph shows U.S teen ages 13 to 17 and which apps they use.
Social media can help people connect if it’s used the right way, but it definitely affects mental health, especially for young people. It spreads both helpful information and a lot of misleading information at the same time. I know I’ve fallen into comparing myself to people online, which can really mess with your mindset. Social media can also help people build careers, grow businesses, and express themselves creatively. For me, it has two sides: sometimes it helps me take my mind off things happening in real life, but when I stay on too long, it starts to hurt my mental health in a negative way because I end up comparing myself to others.
I learned how much social media really influences people including myself especially when it comes to mental health and how we see ourselves. It also showed me that even though social media has a lot of positives, I need to be more aware of how much time I spend on it and the negatives that come along with it.
